Client quote of the week: "stuttering isn't a bad thing"

We agree!!!

What do you think? Does it make people unique?

While answering questions during our game today, a client said the world would be a better place if we spread more kindness. I agree!!!

Go out and spread kindness today! What do you have to lose?

As a parent, you have a voice in making sure speech therapy is supportive, up-to-date, and aligned with what your child who stutters really needs. Here are questions parents and caregivers can ask at an IEP meeting or before an evaluation through a school:

❓“What is the goal of speech therapy for my child? Fluency, communication confidence, or a combination?”

❓“What approaches are you using with students who stutter?”

❓"How will therapy support participation in class?”

❓“How does the team plan to reduce shame, fear, and avoidance around speaking?”

❓“Do you collaborate with my child’s teacher so they understand how to support stuttering in the classroom?”

❓“How will we measure progress beyond fluency? What does success look like?”

You are allowed to ask questions. You are allowed to get clarity. You are allowed to advocate.

Your child deserves support that strengthens confidence, safety, and communication… not pressure to be fluent.

Day 5 of National Stuttering Awareness Week:
Today is about kids who stutter.

Kids who stutter are smart, capable, and full of ideas, just like any other child. They may take a little longer to get their words out, but what they have to say matters.

Let’s create a world where kids who stutter feel heard, supported, and proud of how they speak.

Day 4 of National Stuttering Awareness Week

No two people who stutter are exactly alike.
Every stutter is unique. Every experience is personal. And every voice matters.

There’s no one way to stutter and no one way to navigate the world with a stutter. Today, we celebrate the diversity within the stuttering community and affirm this truth: every voice deserves to be heard.

National Stuttering Awareness Week Day 3: Parent Perspective

"At first, I just wanted my child to stop stuttering.

I thought fluency meant success and that if we could “fix” it, everything would be easier.

But through this journey, I’ve come to understand something deeper:
My child doesn’t need to be fluent to be heard.
They don’t need to hide their voice to be accepted.
They just need to know they’re loved exactly as they are.

Now, I want them to speak freely—whether they stutter or not."

Thank you for sharing!

Let’s shift the goal from fixing speech to embracing communication, confidence, and connection.

Day 2 of National Stuttering Awareness Week
Let’s talk visibility. Stuttering is often misunderstood, and many who stutter feel pressure to hide it. Today, we honor the courage it takes to speak openly, even when it’s hard. Stuttering is not something to fix—it’s something to understand.

I had the pleasure of joining Marisha over at for a podcast episode all about stuttering and navigating conversations with parents.

We talked about the real challenges SLPs face when partnering with parents and how we can build stronger, more supportive relationships to best assist children who stutter.

One thing I forgot to mention during the episode (isn't that always how it goes 😅) is how stuttering is variability can be especially tough for parents and people who stutter. One day it might seem like stuttering is very smooth and easy, and the next day feels completely different. This can be confusing and emotionally exhausting. This unpredictability is something I think we, as SLPs, need to name, validate, and address in our work with families.

Stuttering Acceptance Week is almost here—starting May 12!
This year’s theme: Unapologetically Me.

It’s about showing up as you are, owning your voice, and celebrating the power of being real.

No filters, no apologies—just you.

Quote brought up during the Annual ABSCF Stuttering Conference.

Powerful!!

Stuttering goes deep. As SLPs, we must look at the whole person and listen to their life experiences.
