Dr. Howell offers Holistic Family Medicine to the public using an integrative approach, blending the best of both natural and conventional medicine. He is committed to individualized as well as total family care. His discovery into complementary and alternative medicine began in the mid 1980’s. His passion for this type of medicine grew as a consequence of discovering that there were other options and choices that one could make on the road to wellness. Dr. Howell was born in Quito, Ecuador and came to the United States as a young boy. He grew up in a rural farming and ranching community in southwest Kansas, and received a degree in biology from Fort Hays State University. Dr. Howell moved to Texas to work with troubled youth, and while there, studied massage therapy and nutrition. Eventually he opened his own massage therapy and wellness business. To further develop his ability to help his clients, he received a master degree in professional counseling from West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas. In 1995 Dr. Howell discovered that there were medical schools that offered a degree program in naturopathic medicine. Dr. Howell chose Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine from where he received his doctorate. Dr. Howell specializes in natural pain rehabilitation, cardiovascular disease screening and prevention, and bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. He has had the privilege and honor of being mentored by one of the most respected prolotherapy specialist in the nation, Kent Pomeroy, MD. Dr. Howell believes that the path to wellness is a journey to be taken by the physician and patient working together toward a common goal. He is committed to guiding you on that journey.

There’s much more to the functioning heart than just what is taught in medical school.

There’s much more to the functioning heart than just what is taught in medical school.

The human heart produces a magnetic field that is more than 100 times stronger than the field generated by the brain. This powerful field can be detected up to 3 feet away from the body and changes depending on emotional states. Scientists have discovered that the energy emitted by the heart influences brain activity, showing that our emotions literally affect the energy we give off.

Research from HeartMath indicates that people who practice heart coherence techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation, or gratitude exercises, experience improved brain function, reduced anxiety, and enhanced focus. These practices help align the heart and brain, creating a more balanced and efficient system for processing emotions and making decisions.

This research challenges the traditional belief that intelligence and emotional awareness come solely from the brain. Instead, it shows that the heart and brain work together in a dynamic, bidirectional system. The heart plays a central role in intuition, emotional intelligence, and even how others sense the energy we radiate. Understanding this connection opens the door to practices that improve both mental clarity and emotional well-being.

The holidays can be a beautiful time of connection and celebration, but they can also bring on added stress, overwhelm, and anxiety. It’s important to remember that your nervous system needs care, especially during busy and emotionally charged seasons.

Simple daily practices can make a big difference. From adjusting your diet to supporting your body with targeted supplements and calming herbs, there are natural ways to feel more grounded and resilient.

While we can’t always control the chaos around us, we can support how our bodies and minds respond to it.
