There is a lot of misinformation and bad advice floating around, but I think I am most upset to hear clients' frustration when they are struggling to reach goals that aren't really serving them.

Your weight means nothing in comparison to your muscle mass. Trying to get more steps in but never adding resistance can actually be doing more harm than good on your joints. And stressing yourself out about all of these numbers?? Definitely not helping.

Goals are important, just remember to focus on numbers that matter, and to strive for progress, not perfection.

Myofascial Decompression aka Cupping

ℹ️ Applies negative pressure on tissue to create space between the layers of the fascia

ℹ️ Increases blood and fluid movement into and out of the tissue

ℹ️ Alleviates nerve pressure and activation

Some less commonly known conditions cupping helps treat:

🟢 Acne and eczema

🟢 Postherpetic neuralgia from shingles

🟢 Breathing complications associated with congestion, lung inflammation, and diaphragm restriction

Deep tissue massage isn't about pressure or intensity. It is about intention.

Other forms of massage that are designed to reduce stress or move fluids work on more superficial layers of the body.

The intention of deep tissue massage is to access tissue that are .... deeper.

Gluteus Minimus trigger point pain referrals (pictured above) are a great example of how intention is critical in treatment planning.

Here is what you need to know about symptoms of TrPs in the glute min:

⭐️ Oftentimes, mimick sciatica, leading to unnecessary attention being directed at the piriformis and the sciatic nerve being irritated (making the problem worse).

⭐️ Clients with glute min TrPs will frequently ask for deep pressure in their legs in an attempt to alleviate pain. This will provide some temporary relief because satellite TrPs and bullied tissue will be addressed, but the root cause still will not be resolved.

⭐️ Pain can impact walking, sitting, bending, and twisting, causing the body to adopt less ideal movement patterns, leading to additional TrPs and tissue dysfunction in other areas.

Out of all of the muscles in the body, this is the one that makes clients say "I didn't even know that hurt!", the most.

As practitioners, we have to know what we are pressing on, especially if we're really going to put our elbows into it (hold your applause).

DM issheevergoingtostoptalking if you'd like more information than you probably need about why the way you are moving is causing a hostile relationship in your hip and back muscles.

BONE DENSITY FACTS

📈 Bone mass peaks in our late teens/early 20s

🦴 About half of all women and 1 out of 4 men will break a bone due to osteoporosis at some point in their lives

🤸‍♂️ Studies report that athletes have 10% higher bone density than non-athletes amongst the general population

🥛 Many factors contribute to bone health, some out of our control, but that shouldn't stop us from controlling the ones we can

Oblique slings are one important reason that our practitioners assess and treat the body as a functional system rather than focus solely on the areas that hurt.

The anterior and posterior oblique slings link muscles and soft tissue in the upper body to those on the opposite side of the lower body. These muscles work together to transmit force and provide trunk stability. When dysfunction occurs along the line of one of these slings, whether through restriction or weakness, the system must adapt to continue movement. These maladaptations frequently lead to pain, decreased mobility, and imbalances in other systems of the body.

🚩 Common complaints that may indicate oblique sling dysfunction:

- Pain or restriction in the opposing shoulder and hip (e.g. R shoulder, L hip)

- Pain in the thoracolumbar fascia or SI joints (low back, see image 3)

- Weakness or instability in rotational movements, such as running, walking, throwing, twisting, etc. in one or both directions

🆘️ How we can help:

- Identify dysfunction throughout the system

- Provide soft tissue work to areas of restriction

- Provide customized exercises that train rotational movements and increase strength in weak muscles throughout the sling
