Nobody wants to talk about bugs... but here we are. 🐛

Flea & tick season is officially upon us, and that means it's time to get serious about protecting our fur babies — inside and out.

Itchy skin. Dull coat. Tummy troubles. Creepy little parasites you don't even know are there. Yeah, we're going there.

✨ My mentor Dr. Janet Roark is doing a live webinar Monday, April 27th at 7PM all about parasites and the natural solutions that can help.

$54 to protect your pet all season long? Worth every penny.

🐾 Let's talk about something nobody wants to bring up — but everybody deals with every spring.

Fleas. Ticks. Intestinal parasites. The whole creepy-crawly crew.

The itching. The scratching. The dull coat. The digestive upset. And honestly — do you even know how to properly remove a tick? (I get the heebie-jeebies every time!)

Whether it's biting parasites on the outside or worms wreaking havoc on the inside, your animals deserve real protection — naturally.

That's why I'm so excited to share that my friend and mentor, Dr. Janet Roark, is hosting a LIVE webinar this Monday, April 27th at 7PM.

We're covering it all — what to watch for, how parasites affect your pets, and the natural solutions that actually work.

When we lose a beloved pet, we often focus on our own grief, but our other animals feel that loss too. Dogs and cats can form deep bonds with one another. When a companion dies, the absence can be confusing and unsettling. You might notice changes in behavior and these are natural responses to loss. There are gentle ways we can support them. Grief doesn’t follow a timeline, for us or for them.

A woman I refer clients to who have lost an animal, Cinda Gillian from Life & Death Services- Pet Division, wrote a blog about this tender experience and how to support your dog through it.

Just like us, dogs experience loss in their own way. While they don’t understand death in human terms, they do notice the sudden change, the missing routine, and the absence of their companion’s scent, sound, and presence. Your dog may search, wait by doors, or appear restless in places where th...

Grass eating is so miss understood. Dogs and cats know what their bodies need and will go find it. If you animal is eating grass there is a reason they are not board (as one person explained to me) lol.

Your dog is eating grass again. Not nibbling — choosing long coarse blades, chewing deliberately, swallowing fast.

Ten minutes later, she throws up on the patio.

You've looked it up. The internet says upset stomach, nutrient deficiency, or nobody really knows. The answer is probably simpler and older than any of those.

🐾 Watch what she selects:

She doesn't eat all grass. She wants the long, coarse, wide-blade stuff growing at the fence line or the garden edge — not the short clipped lawn. The coarser the blade, the more it irritates the stomach lining on the way down.

This looks a lot like a deliberate purge. Wild canids do the same thing — eating coarse plant material to trigger a vomiting response that clears the upper digestive tract. The grass isn't food. It's a tool.

Dogs that eat shorter, tender blades without vomiting afterward may be doing something different — grazing for fiber, which is a separate behavior entirely. The purge pattern is specific: long blades, fast chewing, vomiting shortly after.

She's not sick. She's running a protocol her species has carried for thousands of generations. The couch is new. The instinct isn't.

The mess on the patio is the evidence that it worked. Clean it up. She feels better.

🌿 One note — if your dog eats grass obsessively, seems uncomfortable before or after, or vomits frequently without relief, that's worth a vet conversation. Occasional purposeful purging is normal behavior. Chronic grass-eating or distress is a different signal.

This is a very interesting shift and finding in veterinary care & pet ownership. When we know better we do better. Follow the updates.

We all want to prevent unwanted litters, but preventing litters does not have to mean removing hormones. There is a newer approach.

Veterinary reproduction specialists are increasingly recommending hormone preserving sterilization, a way to prevent unwanted litters while supporting long term health. Procedures like vasectomies and o***y sparing spays (hysterectomies) can be performed safely as early as 8 weeks, allowing dogs to retain the natural hormones their bodies need. For female dogs, an o***y-sparing spay can prevent pyometra because the uterus is removed, so the infection has nowhere to develop.

The 2026 peer-reviewed study published in the journal Animals by Isabel Pires and Rita Files on urinary bladder cancer in dogs and cats highlights that spaying and neutering (gonadectomy) are associated with an increased risk of urothelial carcinoma (UC), particularly in dogs, though the evidence is observational rather than causal. One cited epidemiological study found that neutered dogs had approximately 4.6 times higher odds (OR ≈ 4.57) of developing UC compared to intact dogs, suggesting a strong statistical association. The proposed biological mechanism centers on hormonal changes after sterilization: removal of the go**ds eliminates s*x hormone feedback, causing luteinizing hormone (LH) levels to rise dramatically (up to ~30× normal), which may stimulate cell proliferation in tissues like the bladder and potentially contribute to carcinogenesis. Additionally, neutering is linked to metabolic changes such as increased appetite, reduced metabolic rate, and a higher likelihood of obesity—another independent risk factor for cancer due to chronic inflammation and altered adipokine signaling.

Sometimes when a dog is scared and won't give for a walk it takes another furry friend to talk them into going for that walk.

For some reason Daisy has stopped wanting to go for walks. She stops and throws on the brakes when she reaches the end of the driveway.

But Daisy has walked with one furry friend and she loves going with him. So when another sitter couldn't get her to go for a walk and I was close at a morning drop-in walk I asked her tk bring Daisy out. Daisy had only met Cali one time before so I wasn't sure if Daisy would hide. She was excited to see me but terrified because Cali is a big girl. Cali is a sweet silly Boxer mix and loves to play. We were going to switch handling dogs but Daisy thought she was going to get left behind and came running out. (Thank goodness she was already on lead) Daisy jumped and ran around like a crazy dog very excited to be out with me and new friend.

Sometimes it does take another dog with a great disposition to speak their language. Socialization is so important when they are puppies. Sometimes that means just sitting and watching the going on in the neighborhood. Have playmates with other dogs.

It is with a broken heart that I say a sad farewell to a beloved Westie. My client! Myka crossed Rainbow Bridge. You will be forever missed by those who knew and loved you. I will miss our conversations and your sass.

I was once told that pets come to us to teach us about unconditional love and learning to understand loss better.. I truly believe that after the year we've had.

A microchip is one of the most powerful tools for reuniting lost pets — but only if it’s set up correctly.

Here’s what many pet parents don’t realize 👇

🔍 Microchips are not GPS
📇 They only work when your contact information is current

If you’ve moved, changed phone numbers, or adopted your pet from someone else, it’s time to check.

✨ Action Steps (Do This Today):
✔️ Confirm your pet is microchipped
✔️ Verify the chip is registered
✔️ Update your name, phone number & email
✔️ Add a trusted backup contact

This simple check can be the difference between lost forever and home again.

💛 Empowered pet parents save lives.

👉 Comment “CHECKED” once you’ve verified your pet’s chip
👉 Share to remind another pet parent

💓If you are in the NE Mesa Area and find a pet, Kokopelli Pet Care has a chip scanner and will come to you, or you can take the pet to a local vet.
