Now before you get all up in arms about this statement - let me clarify. First this is from the first chapter of the Tao Te Ching. Second, the context of the chapter is talking about the primordial darkness that existed before God gave us their light. So now that we have those two insights, let’s see if we can unpack what darkness within darkness as a gateway to understanding means. I think it means that to truly understand anything or anyone, we have to look deeply inside ourselves. And if we were formed out of darkness, we need to look there. If we hold darkness within ourselves, then we need to look there as well. Because if we want to truly understand light, we have to understand what isn’t light: darkness.
