The jaw and pelvic floor are very closely intertwined, especially when we are discussing pregnancy + child birth.
Try this for a minute: unclench your jaw, take a deep breath and soften… you will notice your pelvic floor is able to soften and relax along with that.
Let’s talk about it! 🗣️
We have a connection with the pelvic floor + jaw with :
• fascial + muscular - when the fascia is tight in one area it generally also tightens in the other as well.
• nervous system - fight or flight signals to the jaw/pelvic floor tension. Safely to the nervous system allows softening to both mechanisms.
• breath - The diaphragm works in tandem with the pelvic floor. When the jaw is tight, breathing tends to be shallow, which limits the natural rise-and-fall movement of the pelvic floor.
💡 A practical tip for labor:
A soft open jaw = a soft open pelvic floor = smoother birth.
