Today is "National Hugging Day is celebrated annually on January 21. It was created by Kevin Zaborney in 1986 to encourage people to embrace the simple yet powerful act of hugging, promoting positive emotional connections and the health benefits that hugs can bring."

HOWEVER some of our friends DO NOT like touch with some sensory issues. Here's how you can ask and/or respond to a friend:

🤗Would you like a hug?
🤗Can I give you a hug?
🤗Would you like a hug or a high five?

Give them time to answer and if their verbal or non-verbal language agrees to it, you may proceed! If not, please be respectful and do not force it or make them feel bad for denying the affection.

▶▶Self-Advocacy & Independence

❗Learn one way to ask for help when needed.
👟Practice making small choices (snack, outfit, activity) to build decision-making skills.
🥳Keep a “proud moments” journal to track growth.

Asking for help can be hard, even for adults sometimes. Tracking, celebrating, and expanding on moments when your little has asked for help is a great way to have them use their independence!

▶▶Social Connection

👋Practice one social skill at a time (like greeting a friend or asking a question).
🕜Schedule regular playdates or interest-based group activities.
🥸Use role-play to prepare for tricky social situations.

What a great way to work with your little. It doesn't take long and it doesn't have to include many details, but something simple as practicing then implementing "Hi!" or "No thank you" can be a huge win and a great starting point!

▶▶Strength-Based Learning

🖼Spend 10–15 minutes a day exploring a special interest.
🎨Try one new creative outlet—drawing, coding, building, or storytelling.
😎Share their knowledge with family or friends to boost confidence.

This is a great way to give your little positive feedback! It would be another positive thing to celebrate!

▶▶Routines & Predictability

📅Use a visual schedule to make daily transitions smoother.
🎒Choose one small routine to master (like packing their school bag the night before).
🍎Have a “transition plan” for big changes, like returning to school after breaks.

Visual schedules are a great way to ease anxiety and help your little move on in transitions!
