I have an announcement 😬
We are moving! After spending our whole lives in the desert, we are moving to the Pacific Northwest this spring! 🌲
Though we are very excited for our new adventure, I am going to miss you all so much! Especially the clients who have allowed me to be a part of their pregnancy and birth journeys ♥️ love you all.
I’ll be keeping my AZ midwifery license active and I’m planning to also get licensed up in WA once I meet the requirements! Excited to be heading to a place where out of hospital birth is more integrated!
🥂 to new adventures!!

Sorry I’ve been MIA from posting on here - We just welcomed our second child into the world about a month ago! 💖
If you haven’t heard, I’m accepting clients with due dates from November on! So reach out if that’s you, and let’s chat to see if we are a good fit for your homebirth dreams ✨
Also, if you have any interest in reading my birth story (spoiler: it’s long, and things didn’t quite go as expected) - it’s on my Instagram ! And you’ll get to see more of the amazing shots my photographer Nicole Angeline Hamic got, like this one!

Some facts about nuchal cords:

🔆 Nuchal cords are incredibly common, occurring in an estimated 1 of 3 births.

🔆 They are very rarely dangerous.

🔆 Fetuses receive oxygen through the umbilical cord, not by breathing through the mouth or nose, so a cord around the neck is not cutting off their air like it would for you or me. If the cord is left in tact, the baby can still be receiving oxygen from the placenta for several minutes after birth.

🔆 Most babies with a nuchal cord have one that is very loose and it can be simply slipped over the head after birth. There is usually no indication of the nuchal cord at all.

🔆 The main way for a nuchal cord to be harmful (if the cord is healthy) is if it is wrapped multiple times and is so tight that it compresses itself, thereby decreasing blood flow inside, or if there is a true knot so tight that it does the same (rare). The cord would have to be extremely tight to cut off blood flow between the body and brain.

🔆 Nuchal cord is very difficult to identify before birth, even with ultrasound.

🔆 You do not need to have a c-section solely due to a suspected nuchal cord.

🔆 Medications given during a birth induction/augmentation can cause erratic & extra strong contractions, causing heart decelerations in the fetus. If a c-section is performed and a nuchal cord is discovered, it is frequently blamed (though the cause was more likely the induction meds). This can lead the mother to feel her baby was "saved" by the hospital staff, when they may have actually been the ones to CAUSE the issues the baby was "saved" from.

🔆 A healthy umbilical cord is filled with a gelatinous substance called Wharton's Jelly that protects the cord vessels as a fetus twists and turns its way inside the uterus.

If you want to read up on the evidence on nuchal cord, visit my Instagram account () and scroll back to my post of that name.

Sorry I’ve been a bit on and off with posting - I’ve been trying to focus on enjoying this last trimester, my family, and this new little human growing inside of me. After an absolutely beautiful birth two weeks ago, I’ve been off call and have a very light midwifery schedule until my baby decides to come! I am soaking up every moment, and I also am dreaming of what’s to come when I return to attending births again in a handful of months! ♥️ Remember, if your due date is November or later - reach out and let’s chat!
Sending love to all of you, and thank you for understanding that I may be posting a bit less in the coming months. I definitely have a few more beautiful door pictures to share soon though!

😍 We are so grateful to have been able to be present as this beautiful family of 6 grew into a family of 7! This strong mama is so intuitive and incredible at listening to her body. It was an honor to witness your magic through your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. ✨
It’s always so fun to have older siblings involved at the birth. This mama had a bunch of little doulas cheering her on (and one of her daughters was fully ready to assume the role of the midwife! 😉).
Thank you again for choosing NHBS to be present at another one of your births! 😍

Myth - Blast Monday 💫
Myth: Homebirth is unsafe!!
Well, I would guess most of you following me know that’s just not true, and that Homebirth should be an option for low-risk pregnant people planning an unmedicated birth.
Studies have shown that planned home births attended by midwives maintain low perinatal mortality that is not statistically different than the perinatal mortality rates seen in hospital births. And on top of that, the rates of obstetric interventions and adverse outcomes (such as 3rd and 4th degree tears) are reduced when birthing at home with a midwife.
Of course, Homebirth is not for everyone. If you are high risk, or desire an epidural, do your research to find the hospital that will be best suited to your needs! It’s all about having the information to make the decisions that are right for you.

You may recognize Dr. Monica from - our #1 place to refer for chiropractic care. Not only is she an incredible chiropractor, but she is one of the strongest, most determined mamas I have ever met! You absolutely rocked your birth, and I am still completely amazed by you! Thank you, thank you for choosing NHBS to support and love you through this pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. ♥️♥️

Myth - Blast Monday 💫
Myth: Siblings should not be present at births because it will be traumatizing for them.
Nope!! We absolutely love when siblings are present and involved, even if they are young (the big sister pictured here is only 3 years old!). When kids are exposed to something new, they tend to read the room and react the way they see others reacting! So if they see that everyone is smiling and calm, even while the birthing parent roars their baby out, they tend to stay calm and excited!
So the question to ask yourself is, how will you feel having your older child(ren) present? Does this bring you comfort and excitement, or do you feel stressed by that thought? Listen to that! I also recommend having someone present at the birth who’s only job is to handle your child(ren). Meaning, if your daughter wants a sandwich, your partner won’t have to leave your side to go make it.
We can help your whole family be as present and hands on with the birth as they want to be. We are always watching and right there in case something happens where we need to intervene. ♥️
Did you have your older child(ren) at your birth? What was your experience like? Would love to hear down in the comments! 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

This glowing mama just welcomed her second baby girl in a glorious water birth at home. After powerfully moving through contractions that ramped up quickly, you pushed your baby right into her Daddy’s hands! You’re absolutely incredible 💫 Your ability to tackle whatever challenges are thrown at you and remain so strong is inspiring!
Thank you so much for choosing NHBS to bear witness to your strength. I am so excited to hopefully get to see more of you as you start your journey into birth work!

The last Friday of each month of 2021, I’m going to try to post a book recommendation related to pregnancy, birth, reproductive health, or parenting! They will all be books I have personally read and love! 📚

So first up, we have Real Food for Pregnancy by - and there’s so much to love about this book. It’s easy to read, SO well researched, AND gives actual, tangible guidance, including sample meal plans to help you begin to focus on complete nutrition. This book is wonderful not only if you’re already pregnant, but even if you’re hoping to become pregnant in the future. It’s definitely towards the top of my book recommendation list for clients! ✨

I read through this book again recently to refresh my knowledge for my own pregnancy, and I got as much out of it the second time through as I did the first. Definitely a great book to keep handy.

I also want to add that she has another book: “Real Food for Gestational Diabetes” which is an incredible resource for birthing people with GDM.

Have you read either of these books? Would love to hear what you thought in the comments! I’ll have another recommendation coming at you in February! 💞

Myth-Blast Monday 💫
Myth: 60 seconds is an adequate amount of time for a baby to reap the benefits of delayed cord clamping.
Take a look at these pictures. These were taken by Stephanie Soderblom, founder of NHBS, over a span of 15 minutes!! Swipe to see all of the changes that continue happening much past the 60 second mark.
Now of course, 60 seconds is better than 15 seconds, but your baby will not reap all benefits unless the cord is able to completely stop pulsing, and become limp and white (usually after placenta is delivered!). There have even been campaigns online such as to encourage giving the cord and placenta all the time they need! Like everything in birth, it is going to depend on the individual for how long it takes to complete this process - so why not go off of what we are actually seeing instead of a time limit?

Wednesday’s are for home visits!! 😍 Driving around for visits to see my amazing clients and listening to podcasts makes for a wonderful day.

We come to your house a minimum of four times throughout your care!

⭐️ The first time is your prenatal home visit, which occurs around when you’re 34 weeks pregnant. This visit is structured just like an office prenatal - about an hour long, chatting about everything and of course checking on you and baby!

⭐️ Then of course, we will be at your home for your labor and birth!

⭐️ After your baby is born, we will be coming back out to your home postpartum to check on you twice. These visits are routinely at 1 day and 3 days postpartum!

⭐️ One of the great things about midwifery care is that it is individualized. If something comes up that indicates extra home visits, we add visits! We are here for you 😊

The Golden Hour ✨

So aptly named, the hour after birth should be a magical time full of skin to skin, nourishing of birthing person and baby, laughter, and rest. This time is so special.

We are BACK with our Myth - Blast Monday posts for 2021! 💫

Myth : All prenatal vitamins are basically the same. It doesn’t really matter which one you choose to take.

Unfortunately, prenatal vitamins vary *a lot*. So how does one go about picking a good quality prenatal that has the nutrients you and your growing baby need?

First, let’s talk Folate, an extremely important nutrient to your growing baby, especially in the first trimester. Most people know they should supplement folate for pregnancy, but many don’t realize that the form of folate is just as important! It’s estimated that up to 60% of people cannot completely absorb folate in its synthetic form of Folic Acid. So opt for the more bioavailable form of L-methylfolate (or 5-methyltetrahydrofolate).

Nutrients like Choline, DHA, and Vitamin D are often left out of prenatal formulations, even though they are vital to pregnancy and fetal health. Try to find a prenatal that includes these!

Of course, not everyone is going to be able to buy the highest quality vitamins, and that’s okay. Do what you can, because every bit counts! If you have the resources to, however, please do your research and talk to your provider about taking the highest quality, most nutrient dense prenatal that you can! ♥️

Do you have a favorite prenatal? Let me know in the comments below 👇🏻 and I’ll comment what I personally chose for my prenatal this time around!
