As monsoon season ramps up in the Tularosa Basin, lightning bolts increasingly illuminate stormy skies above the park. Although lightning takes a mere moment to strike – disappearing in a literal flash – it can leave solid evidence of its fleeting existence.

🌩Fulgurite, also called fossilized lightning, is the physical representation of a powerful electric current. When lightning strikes sand, it can create up to one billion volts of electricity, heating the ground to 60,000*F – six times hotter than the surface of the sun! The intense heat of the bolt transforms the sediment it strikes, superheating it and creating the structure called fulgurite.

🌩You may be familiar with fulgurite via pop culture references such as the 2002 film “Sweet Home Alabama.” The fulgurite featured in this movie is the most common type, formed in quartz-based beach sand and glass-like in appearance. Here at White Sands, our gypsum sand produces opaque, tubular fulgurites mimicking the linear branching structure of the bolt itself.

🌩If you are lucky enough to chance upon fulgurite in its natural environment, remember to leave it where you found it. Not only is it illegal to remove items from national parks, but this will also allow other visitors to experience the same rush of discovery that you did. As always, take only pictures and leave only footprints!

🌩The best time to find fulgurite is following a thunderstorm. Remember to always wait at least 30 minutes after seeing lightning to explore the park. The dune field is an extremely dangerous place to be during a storm, so if you see lightning or hear thunder, return to your vehicle immediately.
