It’s hotter than a pepper sprout out there! 🄵

And while we all might be cranking up the AC, older adults need a little extra care to stay safe and comfortable this season.

Here’s a few summer tips for older loved ones:

šŸ’§ Keep drinks flowing — Hydration is key. Try lemon water, herbal iced tea, or fruit-infused water for a refreshing twist.

🌿 Stick to shade — Morning and evening are best for fresh air. Think porch chats, garden strolls, or birdwatching under a tree.

šŸ“ Eat the rainbow — Seasonal foods like berries, melons, cucumbers, and tomatoes are easy, colorful, and packed with nutrients.

šŸŽ¶ Play their favorite music — It can lift spirits, stir memories, and create connection in an instant.

šŸ‘‚ Be present — Whether it’s a phone call, a visit, or simply sitting nearby, your time means more than you know.

Share this post to shine a light on summer safety for older adults. šŸ”ƒ

ā€œAs a caregiver, you're always juggling three things: independence, safety, and the third we could describe as like joy or comfort.ā€ — Adria Thompson

When you're making decisions on behalf of someone else, the stakes feel higher, and the guilt runs deeper. In this episode of Caregiver Chats, Dr. Lakelyn and Adria unpack the emotional complexity of caregiving and introduce the idea of choosing a priority in the moment.
Whether your loved one is in the early or late stages of dementia, knowing whether to lead with independence, safety, or joy can guide your choices—and ease some of the pressure. šŸ’š Tune in wherever you get your podcasts. šŸŽ§ https://apple.co/3RuALpz

After answering the call to caregiving, Betty June Harp is officially retiring at the vibrant age of 90. šŸŽ‰

She’s been the heart of so many meaningful moments with our Louisville team, and while we’ll miss seeing her smile each day, we’re celebrating all she’s given—and all that’s ahead.

Congratulations on your retirement, Betty June. You’re a legend, a light, and yes, finally a lady of leisure. šŸ’œ

With all our love,

Checkmate: Client’s Competitive Spirit Sparks Julietta’s Smiles

Home InsteadĀ® Care Professional Julietta’s client will do just about anything to win a game of checkers or chess. The twice-honored Care Pro of the Month knows it, and she delights at her client’s intensity and tactics.

Julietta explained: ā€œMy client revels in winning at checkers and chess. So, anytime he senses a possible defeat, the rules change. He’ll start making chess moves in checkers, and checker moves in chess. If my client is feeling particularly mischievous, he’ll make me go to the kitchen, then move the gameboard pieces around to throw me off. He’s an opportunist and will cheat if you give him a chance. But that is OK. I just smile, maybe giggle.ā€

The staff at Home Instead of Metairie, Louisiana, loves Julietta’s easy, good-natured personality and compassionate attitude, which are among her many positive attributes. On July 14, 2020, Julietta joined owner Lisa Rabito’s award-winning Home Instead franchise that serves the Orleans and Jefferson Parishes. Julietta was honored as the Care Pro of the Month in April 2021 and again in June 2025.

Home Instead Human Resources Representative Lynne-Marie Ruckert offered: ā€œThere are so many things we can say about Julietta. She has a quiet strength and even in her own adversity, she can persevere and continue showing up for her clients daily. She has assisted one client for her entire Home Instead tenure. She doesn’t just show up – she steps up. When her client was hospitalized, she was the one who noticed his medical crisis, acted and made sure he got urgent care. Her dedication quite literally saved his life.ā€

Julietta is caring for a new client because her regular client is hospitalized and undergoing rehabilitation. The new client said that, from the minute she met Julietta, she knew Julietta was special. Relationships are made and bonding comes quickly because Julietta always asks clients to tell her exactly what they need and want.

Lynne-Marie added: ā€œWhen I presented Julietta’s certificate, the client was thrilled even though Julietta had been caring for her for only five days. The client wanted to see Julietta’s certificate. Inscribed on the certificate is, ā€˜As a Care Professional who best exemplifies dedication to aging adults by providing tireless, compassionate and devoted service to Home Instead clients and the community … ’ Her client said, ā€˜Julietta embodies all of those things!’ ā€

Discussing her Home Instead story from the beginning five years ago, Julietta said: ā€œI remember seeing a Home Instead TV commercial, and I love helping seniors. Connecting those things, I applied for a job. While caregiving is my current profession, I was a hairstylist in my native Saint Lucia, which is an Eastern Caribbean island nation. In Saint Lucia, family members take care of each other. So, I always had to be taking care of someone. It was usually my mom, my dad, a grand aunt, a grand uncle or close friends.ā€

Julietta’s clients are like family. She said: ā€œThe best thing about my job is knowing I can make my clients happy and secure in their own homes. Simple pleasures really turn out to be impactful for most clients. For example, one client and I often would sit by the window and look out. He always said, ā€˜What a beautiful day. It is still. Nobody is walking by, no vehicles are driving past us and there are no animals.’ I could not disagree with him.ā€

Julietta is among more than 100,000 Care Pros worldwide, and she has helped add to those numbers because of her strong belief in Home Instead’s purpose and core values. Those core values are: ā€œHonor God in all we do; Treat each other with dignity and respect; Encourage growth in ourselves and others; Build value in our service to others.ā€

When ā€œlet’s talkā€ feels like too much, start small.
In this episode of Caregiver Chats, Dr. Lakelyn sits down with Amy Friesen, eldercare expert and author of Breadcrumbs, to explore why families avoid planning conversations—and how to gently start them.

Amy shares why it's rarely a one-time talk, how professionals can help ease tension, and why sometimes the message lands better when it doesn’t come from you.

What if the best medicine for aging well... is friendship? šŸ’š

David Troxel shares how a Home Instead Care Pro became a lifeline for his dad—not just helping around the house, but watching golf, cooking together, and bringing joy back into the day.

When Thao walks into the room, a veteran with advanced Parkinson’s — mostly nonverbal — lights up and says, ā€œThere’s my angel.ā€
Thao Nguyen, a Care Pro with Home Instead, doesn’t just show up. She brings music. She brings home-cooked Vietnamese meals. She brings peace of mind.

Originally from Vietnam, Thao cared for her grandmother and extended family from a young age. That lifelong devotion to elders followed her to the U.S., where a neighbor introduced her to caregiving.

One family loved her cooking so much, they stocked their pantry just so Thao could prepare her signature dishes. Another client requested her by name each week, just to hear her music in the hall.

ā€œI treat them like my own parents,ā€ Thao says. ā€œI love them so much.ā€

Thank you, Thao, for reminding us that exceptional caregiving isn’t just noticed.

Let this story be a reminder: great care creates connection that lasts.
