Injuries can occur whether you are competing or doing regular exercise, but the body is not the only thing affected by an injury. Injuries also impact the way we feel. For some athletes, hobbies are part of their identity, & they lose a sense of themselves if they can no longer participate. Your goals for improving/competing can be a big part of life & a source of joy. When an injury occurs, your ability to continue your sport may seem uncertain. The recovery process can include bouts of anger, sadness, frustration, & lack of motivation. These are all normal feelings! Part of recovery is to find ways to bring back what was positive about your sport for you.
Most people think of physical therapy as a means to address pain, improve movement, & get back to their sport. However, PTs can also help with the emotional & mental effects of an injury. PTs understand how the aspects of mental & physical wellness go together. They can help you address some of the emotional responses as well as your physical recovery. They will coach, encourage, & help you set goals to achieve small wins along the way.
Try to be realistic about your injury & the time it will take to recover. Recovery times vary! Your recovery will depend on the type of injury, surgical intervention, & the demands of the sport to which you wish to return. You may have very high expectations, but it is important not to push yourself beyond what your physical therapist recommends.
Here are some tips to consider:
-Talk to your PT about your goals, anxieties, & concerns. They will listen!
-Set realistic goals based on guidance from your PT. Develop short & long-term goals that move you forward.
-Expect that you may have minor setbacks along your path to recovery. Setbacks are normal, your PT can help to overcome them!
-Follow instructions on a gradual return to your regular activity once your PT says it’s safe.
-Stay active! Your PT can recommend ways to help you keep your fitness during recovery. Staying active can reduce the mental stress of being injured.
Many people come out of physical therapy stronger, more fit, more focused, & equipped to prevent future injuries!
