We’re back with a little Nola Pelvic Health Q&A, and this time we’re getting right down to business: pregnancy misconceptions that are common, but NOT “normal”. 🤰🏻

Stick around to hear each of our therapists share their top picks, and let’s debunk:

1. “Peeing on yourself or constantly running to the bathroom is just part of it.” Common? Yes. “Normal”? Not quite. Bladder leakage and urgency are signs that your pelvic floor needs support, not something you just have to live with.
2. “Pain is just part of being pregnant.” Pregnancy can come with changes, but ongoing pain isn’t something you should brush off. There are ways to manage and improve it, and you definitely don’t have to just push through.
3. “You need to stop working out or completely change your routine.” Movement is so important during pregnancy. It’s not a matter of stopping, it’s about learning how to move in a way that supports your body through each stage!

Bottom line: just because something is common doesn’t mean it’s something you have to accept. Your body deserves support every step of the way! 👏🏼

What does “engaging your core” even mean?! Let’s discuss:

Whether you’re pregnant or not (and yes, it IS the same either way), a lot of people think that engaging your core is simply a matter of sucking your belly in, flaring the ribs up, or tucking your pelvis. Let us be the first to tell you… that’s NOT an effective approach.

Instead, think connection over compression, and follow these 3 steps as shown. Overall, it should feel CONTROLLED rather than forced. And mastering it makes a difference in everything from workouts to daily movement to postpartum recovery and beyond.

Give this technique a try at home and let us know.. did it hit different?! 👀

No pictures, please 😎😎

In all seriousness, your feedback means everything to us. We’ve worked hard to create a space where our patients feel heard, supported, and genuinely cared for. Reviews like this remind us why we do what we do.

See below for just one example:

“I received care from NOLA Pelvic Health during both of my pregnancies, and I highly recommend this practice. Sara and Claire were both incredibly knowledgeable and supportive. They addressed the issues I was having and helped me feel confident preparing for birth. I received care from Claire most recently and cannot recommend her enough! She has amazing knowledge of the body and I always felt great after our sessions.”

THANK YOU to our amazing patients for trusting us with such an important part of your journey. We’re honored to be part of your care every step of the way.

Trying the pregnancy belly on every now and then just to feel something… just pelvic floor therapist things 🤪

One of our least favorite myths 😅 Let this be a reminder: You are NOT too young to visit a pelvic floor therapist.

As we always say, pelvic floor therapy goes far beyond pregnancy or postpartum care. It can help with things like urinary leakage, pelvic pain, painful periods, pain with exercise, constipation, and core or hip dysfunction… at ANY age.

If you’re experiencing symptoms, early care can prevent them from becoming chronic. That’s where we come in! Give us a call at 504-814-3615 or visit our website (www.nolapelvichealth.com) to book an appointment with one of our therapists.

Listen, at least we TRY to practice what we preach! 🤳🏼 Sitting and scrolling might feel harmless… but your pelvic floor begs to differ. Here’s why:

Prolonged sitting increases pressure on the pelvic floor, especially when paired with slouched posture or breath-holding. Over time, this can contribute to pelvic pain, core weakness, constipation, and bladder symptoms. When we sit for long periods, the pelvic floor stays in a lengthened or compressed position, circulation decreases, and coordination with the core and diaphragm is reduced.

So how do we avoid this? Change positions often, sit tall, breathe fully into your rib cage and belly, and take movement snacks throughout the day. Your pelvic floor (and the rest of your body too!) will thank you.

There’s a lot of misinformation out there, and we’re here to give you the facts! So if you’re seeing this, it was meant to find you. Here’s the breakdown:

🌟 Pelvic floor PT is for everybody, not only for women and postpartum patients. People of all genders can experience pelvic floor dysfunction, and yes, that includes men (about 1 in 10).

🌟You should never have to push or strain to use the restroom. Straining is a sign something isn’t coordinating properly. Healthy bowel and bladder function should feel relaxed and efficient.

🌟Pelvic floor therapy is WAY more than “just kegels.” In fact, kegels aren’t always the answer.. sometimes they make things worse. Treatment can include relaxation techniques, breathing strategies, mobility work, strength training, and nervous system regulation.

🌟 Your pelvic floor doesn’t work alone. It relies on your core, hips, posture, and breathing to function well. That’s why exercise form, load management, and how you breathe during movement matter more than you think!

Which of these surprised you the most?!
