Happy Monday, Everyone! This is week number 2 in the series of “9 Rules of Fair Fighting for Couples.” This post is about “No Blaming.”

Blaming is unproductive. It puts your partner on the defensive and will likely escalate the argument. Work together to solve the problem. Afterward, the two of you can identify how to prevent the situation from re-occurring.

Happy Sunday, Everyone:

One of my favorite tools that I use with couples who seek my help is "9 Rules of Fair Fighting." I will be discussing one rule per week for the next 9 weeks. Which ones do you struggle with the most in your own relationships?

#1: No Yelling
What?!? Are you really fighting if you're not yelling? 🤔 Think about it. If someone is yelling at you, do you really hear what they're saying? Chances are, fight, flight or freeze mode kicks in. We all get frustrated. We all get angry, but it is important to remember that we shouldn't view our partner as our adversary. We either win together or lose together. Whenever conflict arises, try to discuss things sitting down. Things are "less" likely to escalate. Standing is more aggressive posturing. If you are feeling angry or frustrated, take a few slow, deep breaths. Take a moment to re-group. There's nothing wrong with articulating strong emotions. "I'm feeling angry." "I'm getting frustrated," but they don't need to be expressed at top volume...certainly not if we want our loved ones to "really" hear what we're trying to say.

Sympathy is a word we tend to overuse. We often say it when we mean to say Empathy. They sound similar, but they really are very different. Usually, when those we care for are struggling or in pain, what they need from us is our Empathy, not our Sympathy. I could spend the next few sentences detailing the differences between the two, but I thought I'd share this wonderful and funny Youtube video that clarifies the distinction more entertainingly than I ever could in 3 short minutes. Enjoy!!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZBTYViDPlQ

The world needs you... Yes, you! The next time you start to feel disappointed in yourself because you're trying to be a parent, partner, and employee all at the same time, remember these are 3 different roles and a lot for one person. Manage your expectations. Think about everything you're already doing and be patient with yourself.

You can't pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself first. What feels "selfish" to you is actually a gift to those around you. When you are calm and energized, everyone around benefits.

How do you refill your empty cup?

“What will people think?”

Therapy used to be something whispered about, something people were embarrassed to admit they did.

Thankfully, we’ve gotten smarter about it. Would you be embarrassed about going to a personal trainer? About going to the doctor? About taking a class?

Your therapist is like a coach for your mental health. Be proud that you have the courage to ask for help.

Call or email me to set up an appointment.

Are you holding your breath right now?

Sometimes when everything seems chaotic, it helps to get back to the basics. Focus on the inward and outward motion of your breath, take a moment and watch your chest rise and fall.
Remember that life is going to keep happening and we just have to breathe.

Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. I'm here for you.
