Action painting with the Afternoon Art Explorers! Kids in K-2nd grade used pom poms, liquid watercolors, straws, and spoons to create these splatter paintings. Once dry, they used googly eyes stickers and flair pens to add details and turn them into creatures. Such fun!

Celebrate the magic of the autumn season with a weekend pop-up class!

Join Rachel and Nicole, owners of Backyartists, LLC, and celebrate the joy of autumn or Halloween with a playful and enriching process art and sensory play class designed for young children! In these open-ended, child-led experiences, kids will explore fall colors, textures, and natural materials through a variety of themed activities.

At Backyartists Art Studio, our focus is on the process rather than the product - encouraging creativity, self-expression, and sensory exploration. Each class is designed to support fine motor skills, cognitive development, and confidence—all while having fun and embracing the beauty of the season.

*Tickets are non-refundable, but may be transferred to a friend if you’re unable to attend. Classes will be held at Backyartists Art Studio at 8 Medford Street in Arlington Center.

We are so so excited to announce that we will be running our classes for our youngest Backyartists - Messy Minis!

Our new teacher, Emily Whitney, taught with Nicole at the Reggio inspired Newtowne School in Cambridge and we are thrilled to welcome her to our space. She has tons of experience working with children and babies of all ages and we know she’ll be the perfect addition to our open ended process art and sensory play studio.

As we ramp up the school year, we are inviting families to sign up for one class of Messy Minis at a time. Once we get a consistent group of children together, we’ll likely switch our registration format to longer sessions. For now, you’ll need to visit the “Camps/Events” page under our class listings on our website to register on a week to week basis.

September 15th through December 11th, 2025 (No class on Oct. 13th for Indigenous People’s Day)

Afternoon Art Explorers for K-2nd grade- now enrolling! Wednesday and Thursday afternoons 🎨

Now that class assignments and school supply lists have gone out, the upcoming school year feels real!

After a long day of structured learning in school, children need time to decompress and reset. Process art and sensory play classes at Backyartists offer a valuable outlet for self-expression, emotional regulation, and creativity—without the all the pressure.

Our activities allow kids to explore materials freely, make choices, and engage their senses in calming, hands-on ways. Even as children grow, they benefit from unstructured, creative time that supports well-being, encourages imagination, and helps them process the day in a healthy, mindful way.

This simple sensory bin setup has been so fun! Felt balls, tubes, tape, magnet wands, and bingo chips… we love that the grownups got into the action too and helped to create “marble runs” for the felt balls.

Our weather themed week was extra sunny ☀️ children loved using weather symbols and umbrellas in play dough. They also enjoyed scooping and dumping blue foam in sensory bins ⛅️❄️☔️
