Hula dancing the night away on the 2nd at our Labor Day Luau set the tone for September. As you’ll see, our calendar is packed with activities designed to inspire, educate & energize. First up, our friends at Powerback will be on-site to offer balance screenings on the 11th, we’ll be hosting a jewelry & craft market on the 12th, then we’re honoring and giving back to Methuen’s First Responders on the 16th. September in New England is perfect for another fireside sing-a-long on the 17th, & we’ll be welcoming a rep from Edward Jones who will talk to us about Fraud Prevention on the 18th &, on the 23rd, we’ll learn about and celebrate Rosh Hashana before attending The Edwards Twins show. It’s sure to be a great month of fun-filled days and chill nights here at The Woods at Merrimack.

Looking for a fun way to stay active, lift your spirits, and connect with others? Turn up the music and start dancing. Whether it’s a group class or a solo groove in your living room, dancing offers big benefits for your body and mind.

Here’s why it’s a fantastic choice for independent living seniors:

🦴 Boosts balance and coordination: Dancing strengthens muscles and improves stability, helping reduce the risk of falls.

🧠 Supports brain health: Learning dance steps and moving to music stimulates memory, focus, and cognitive function.

💓 Keeps your heart happy: Even light to moderate dancing can raise your heart rate and support cardiovascular wellness.

😊 Lifts your mood: Dancing releases feel-good endorphins that ease stress and boost emotional well-being.

🎶 Encourages social connection: Whether it’s a partner dance or a group routine, dancing is a joyful way to meet new friends and share laughs.

So go ahead - put on your favorite tune and move your body. Your health will thank you.

Earlier this month, the Lunch Bunch visited Mr. Mike’s Restaurant & Lounge in Haverhill where we were treated to a special menu featuring three of the local hot spot’s most popular dishes: marinated steak tips, baked fresh Ipswich haddock and chicken parmigiana. As an added bonus, the restaurant features a MA Lottery station where folks could play Keno and purchase scratch tickets. I’d say we’re all winners as this outing hit the mark with great food, great friends and great fun!

Oh, what a night! We held our first ever Fireside Sing-a-long on Wednesday night bringing residents together to enjoy the warmth and ambience of the fire, delicious hot chocolate and time with old friends like Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, John Denver and Neil Diamond. We ended this memorable evening singing God Bless America along with Kate Smith. Surely, we didn’t get every note right but we definitely had a great time trying. This gang is already looking forward to our next jam session.

🌿 Plan Outdoor Activities Wisely During Allergy Season

Spending time outside is great for mental and physical health, but during allergy season, a little planning goes a long way. Here are some helpful tips to make the most of your outdoor time while keeping allergens at bay:

☀️ Avoid peak pollen hours: Pollen counts are usually highest in the early morning and on dry, windy days. Aim for late-afternoon or early evening walks when levels are lower.

🌳 Choose your location carefully: Opt for areas with less vegetation or near water, such as lakes or fountains. These spots often have lower pollen concentrations compared to grassy or wooded trails.

🌬️ Check the forecast: Use local weather apps or allergy trackers to monitor pollen levels before heading out. On high-count days, consider indoor alternatives or keep outings short and shaded.

With a little preparation, you can stay active and enjoy the outdoors comfortably and safely.

Who wore it best? We love our residents so much here at The Woods, we even try to dress like them. We usually keep things casual at our weekly Happy Hour but these two, resident Ann B. & Concierge Catherine brought the fashion this week. Don’t they both look chic rocking this laid back Summer style? Looking good, ladies.
