"Mindfulness" seems to be growing in popularity every day, but what does it mean?

Mindfulness is about focusing on the present instead of ruminating on the past or worrying about the future.

It's benefits include living life to the fullest, making deeper connections with others, lowered anxiety, and so much more.

Mindfulness takes practice, but how does one practice mindfulness?

That is what this group is for! Dr. Nicholas Scheidt, Psy. D and Valerie Libutti, Clinical Mental Health Counseling Intern will teach the basics of what mindfulness is, how it can help in our everyday lives, and how to get started in your mindfulness practice.

Many of us are wired to seek approval from others, whether it be praise from a boss or validation from a loved one.

However, this can make us feel disconnected from ourselves and others because our behaviors end up revolving around the goal of receiving validation instead of reflecting our own values. Even worse, when we do receive that validation, we can feel unsatisfied and misunderstood because we are not being true to ourselves.

Frequently these maladaptive cognitions are a result of deep insecurity that may have begun in childhood when a caregiver only showed love and affection when they felt the child "deserved it."

What is an "inner critic"?

It is a mode that reflects one's childhood experiences with discipline and authority. It can almost be like having an inner bully that says you will never be good enough or that you don't deserve happiness or success.

Do I Have One?

Yes--everyone has one! But everyone's inner critic is unique depending on childhood experiences.

What's wrong with having an inner critic? Isn't "tough love" beneficial sometimes?

Your inner critic isn't satisfied no matter what you do. Did you get a big promotion at work? Your inner critic says you didn't deserve it. Did you go on a date with someone and enjoy yourself, hoping for a second date? Your inner critic will pop-up to tell you they will never care for you because you aren't good enough.

Want to learn more about your inner critic and what you can do to talk back to it?

Contact Ally Psychological today at 786-250-2221 or at the link in the bio.

We offer virtual services and in-person sessions, with sliding scale spots are available!
