Protect your skin this summer! With UV Index levels frequently reaching 10–11+, the Florida sun can cause skin damage in under 10 minutes. Coastal and southern areas like Miami and Key West often experience the most intense exposure, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Whether you're heading to the beach or just walking to your car, be mindful of how much sun you’re getting.

And remember, Mount Sinai Medical Center is here for its community, with three Emergency Departments always ready to serve residents and visitors across South Florida.

Stay sun smart—your skin will thank you.

Thanks to major advancements in orthopedic surgery, minimally invasive techniques are changing the way we approach joint health, especially when it comes to hip preservation surgery.

One such breakthrough is the periportal hip scope, a technique that allows less tissue disruption, quicker healing, and faster recovery times. Dr. Kevin Wang, an orthopedic surgeon at Mount Sinai Medical Center who specializes in minimally invasive hip procedures, explains how this cutting-edge approach is redefining patient care and mobility.

Peter Pietrzkiewicz considers himself a healthy and active person—mindful of what he eats, committed to wellness, and never one to ignore the signs when something feels off. When his father came to Mount Sinai Medical Center’s ER in Aventura for a UTI, a routine CT scan uncovered a colon mass that was later confirmed as stage 2 cancer and removed thanks to the swift coordination between Mount Sinai’s GI, oncology, and surgical teams.

That experience stayed with Peter, especially when he began dealing with long bouts of unexplained abdominal pain. Just days before his father’s surgery, Peter ended up in an out-of-state ER with a suspected case of appendicitis. After returning home, he consulted with Mount Sinai surgeon Dr. Kiranmayi Muddasani, a colorectal surgeon at Mount Sinai Medical Center, who later performed what began as a laparoscopic appendectomy but turned into a rare, more complex ileectomy due to an inflamed and ruptured colon.

Thanks to Dr. Muddasani’s expertise and the minimally invasive approach, Peter was up and walking within days, and nearly fully recovered within ten. His advice? “Work with experts. If something doesn’t feel right, act on it.”

When Olga Weinstein received an endoscopy in April of 2023, the doctor found an ulcer in her stomach, and test results later revealed that cancer cells were present. “Being the person that I am, I started researching where I should have my treatment done,” Olga says. “The name Dr. Kfir Ben-David at Mount Sinai kept coming up.” Her choice was solidified during her initial meeting with Dr. Ben-David, Roni Jacobson Endowed Chairman of Surgery and General Surgery Program Director at Mount Sinai’s Comprehensive Cancer Center, to discuss a treatment plan. “He’s not only a good surgeon, but a good human.”

The Miami Beach resident feels fortunate that the cancer was caught in its very early stages. “Mount Sinai’s team is a well-oiled machine,” Olga says. “They have meetings once a week and discuss their patients with other physicians to get opinions from well-accomplished doctors.” While Olga kept her diagnosis and treatment mostly private, she felt compelled to share her story in hopes that it could help others. “The reason that I’m sharing this story is because I was treated so well. Mount Sinai is, in my opinion, the best cancer center to go to in this area.”
