Peter Pietrzkiewicz considers himself a healthy and active person—mindful of what he eats, committed to wellness, and never one to ignore the signs when something feels off. When his father came to Mount Sinai Medical Center’s ER in Aventura for a UTI, a routine CT scan uncovered a colon mass that was later confirmed as stage 2 cancer and removed thanks to the swift coordination between Mount Sinai’s GI, oncology, and surgical teams.
That experience stayed with Peter, especially when he began dealing with long bouts of unexplained abdominal pain. Just days before his father’s surgery, Peter ended up in an out-of-state ER with a suspected case of appendicitis. After returning home, he consulted with Mount Sinai surgeon Dr. Kiranmayi Muddasani, a colorectal surgeon at Mount Sinai Medical Center, who later performed what began as a laparoscopic appendectomy but turned into a rare, more complex ileectomy due to an inflamed and ruptured colon.
Thanks to Dr. Muddasani’s expertise and the minimally invasive approach, Peter was up and walking within days, and nearly fully recovered within ten. His advice? “Work with experts. If something doesn’t feel right, act on it.”
