Genetic testing is a powerful tool in modern medicine, especially when it comes to aortic diseases. The aorta (the heart’s main blood vessel) plays a critical role in delivering blood to vital organs, and knowing whether your aorta is at risk can be lifesaving. In fact, about 20-30% of aortic diseases are inherited.

Dr. Irman Forghani, Director of both Genetics and the Rad Center for Precision Medicine at Mount Sinai, explains why genetic testing is crucial for individuals with a family history of aortic conditions. Early detection can guide preventative care and potentially catch something early before it’s too late.

Congratulations to Maria Morales, RN, on receiving the DAISY Award for her outstanding compassion, professionalism, and genuine care.
In her nomination, a patient shared that before arriving at Mount Sinai’s Emergency Center, their pain and symptoms had been ignored and dismissed by both their OB/GYN and an urgent care center. When they arrived at Mount Sinai, everything changed because of Maria.

As the first person the patient encountered, Maria immediately sprang into action, bringing a wheelchair and coming to their aid. From that moment on, she made the patient feel safe, comfortable, and truly seen. Maria validated the patient’s pain and reassured them that what they were experiencing was real and mattered. She formed a genuine connection and went above and beyond—even bringing the patient a full entrée for lunch.

Because of Maria, the patient left with a smile and a clear understanding of their care plan.

Thank you, Maria, for your extraordinary dedication and for exemplifying the compassionate care we strive to provide every day.
