5 ways to avoid Headaches & TMJ

TMJ statistics
Statistic #1: 1 out of every 12 people in the United States are currently affected by a TMJ disorder. That’s 12% of the country’s population and equals about 35 million people. This number may be higher due to improper and undiagnosed cases.

Statistic #2: TMJ disorders are four times more common in women than it is for men.

Statistic #3: More than 90% of patients who are seeking treatment for their TMJ disorder are women in their childbearing years.

Statistic #4: Only about 50 to 60% of people with a TMJ disorder will seek treatment. Those who don’t get treatment continue to live with painful side effects. In fact, 15% of those left untreated will even develop a chroni (http://www.deardoctor.com/inside-the-magazine/issue-25/chronic-jaw-pain-and-associated-conditions/) c TMJ disorder.

Statistic #5: It is estimated that for every 100 million working adults in the United States, TMJ disorders contribute to 17.8 million lost work days annually.

Avoiding Headaches & TMJ

Step 1: Avoiding Forward Head Posture
Forward Head Posture pulls on your suprahyoid muscles, which pulls your mandible posteriorly, and that will compress the temporomandibular joint causing pain.

Step 2: Avoid para-functiononal behaviors
No chewing on pencils, biting nails etc..

Step 3: Proper oral positioning
Lips closed, tongue to the palate, breath through the nose.

Step 4: Avoid Food Allergens
A stuffy nose at bedtime will make swallowing difficult, nasal obstruction, mouth breathing and that can cause clenching.

Step 5: Protect your eye posture
If you read in bed or watch TV make sure that you are not tilting your head too far back or forward, and that screens are centered so that your neck can be in a rested position.

Solar Eclipse Aug 21st, 2017

Tomorrow we will experience a Solar Eclipse, see times of the eclipse below.

Basic steps for feeling better. Forward Head Posture contributes to TMD Symptoms. However, changing our posture is not easy, it can take months until it becomes habit. So don't give up! Baby steps starting with 1 min of good posture, building up to extended periods.

Step 1: Chin Tucks
Tuck your chin to your chest and elongate the back of the neck throughout the day. Start with 1 min periods and build up to longer periods as tolerated

Step 2: Tongue to the spot
Place your tongue to the spot on the roof of your mouth. Try to maintain the position throughout the day and when going to sleep. Start with 1 min periods and build up to longer periods as tolerated.

Step 3: Correct Forward Head
Position head over the shoulders, shoulders back with chin tucked. Hold the position for 1 min periods and build up to longer periods as tolerated

Tongue to the Spot Exercise.

Daily Exercise

TONGUE TO THE SPOT!

What does Tongue to the spot mean? Why do I need to do that? Who is it for? Why will it help me sleep better?

What does Tongue to the Spot mean? Touch the anterior portion of the alveolar ridge (right behind the upper central teeth) using a cotton swab, tiny dental band, life saver or a tongue depressor. and hold the tongue on the "spot" 5-10 times for several seconds at a time. Repeat the holding procedure several times a day in order to insure awareness for the tongue tip's in the correct resting position. This also strengthens the tongue in this position.

Why do I need to do that to sleep better? This exercise helps awareness of proper placement of the tongue tip when at rest and when initiating the swallow pattern. This is the natural resting position of the tongue to allow air to pass through the nose, allowing good, nose breathing sleep. Also reducing mouth breathing, sleep apnea and snoring.

Who is it for? Anyone that mouth breaths, snores, has sleep apnea, "buck" teeth from tongue thrust, lisp, TMJ etc. young and old, you are never too old to strengthen your tongue and sleep better!

A nice email a Client wrote to her doctor
re: Robert Murdocco RPT, CFC, therapy services.
Sept 6th 2016
"" I have to introduce you to several valuable local resources, and one specifically: a local physical therapist named Robert Murdocco. He is incredibly knowledgeable and professional, and personable too.
You may recall that "H" has been experiencing headaches for many years. You know we were very thorough and complete. We met with neurologists, an ent, we did blood work in your office, did NAET allergy work in your office, we tried liquid vitamin shots, we tried gluten and dairy free diets, we tried massages, she got glasses,...you know we really tried it all! Finally, last year, we saw a neuromuscular dentist. Through multiple diagnostic tests completed over several days, she determined that "H's" jaw is improperly aligned, therefore causing the muscles to be stressed, leading to the chronic headaches. Before the dentist could begin work realigning her jaw, "H" needed help relaxing her muscles into their proper positions; he recommended physical therapist Robert Murdocco. "H" has been seeing Robert since December. We stayed consistent with her often weekly therapy appointments, and for the first time in almost 7 years, "H" has tremendous relief. Robert safely massages and manipulates "H’s" neck and its surrounding muscles. He also gives her exercises to strengthen and correct alignment, and relieve the headaches herself. Robert has been a gift to work with, and I wanted to share this tremendously valuable resource."
