Yin Yoga regulates the flow of energy in the body.
It is a more meditative approach with a physical focus much deeper than Yang like practices. Here the practitioner is trying to access the deeper tissues such as the connective tissue and fascia and many of the postures, that we hold for longer periods of time, focus on areas that encompass a joint (hips, sacrum, spine).
Yin yoga is an effective practice to maintain the flexibility of the body, to deepen the connection with the breath and train the mind to remain present through the entire practice.
