Spotlight on Florida’s Black Medical Trailblazers: Dr. Alexander Hanson Darnes ✨🏥

Dr. Alexander Hanson Darnes (c. 1840 – 1894) made history as Jacksonville’s first Black physician and the second in Florida. Born into slavery in St. Augustine, he overcame immense barriers to earn a medical degree from Howard University in 1880.

Returning to Florida, Dr. Darnes established a thriving practice in Jacksonville, where he became a beacon of hope during the devastating 1888 yellow fever epidemic. His dedication to public health and community service earned him deep respect across racial lines—his funeral was the largest in the city’s history at that time, with 3,000 attendees.

We honor Dr. Darnes’ legacy as a medical pioneer who paved the way for future generations of Black physicians. 🌿💙

🔬 Spotlight on Black Medical Trailblazers 🔬
This Black History Month, we celebrate the groundbreaking contributions of Florida’s Black pioneers in healthcare. Dr. William B. Sawyer (November 23, 1886 – 1950), a protégé of W. E. B. Du Bois, founded Miami’s first hospital for African Americans and established a hotel in what was then Colored Town (now Overtown).
