Spotlight on Florida’s Black Medical Trailblazers: Dr. Alexander Hanson Darnes ✨🏥

Dr. Alexander Hanson Darnes (c. 1840 – 1894) made history as Jacksonville’s first Black physician and the second in Florida. Born into slavery in St. Augustine, he overcame immense barriers to earn a medical degree from Howard University in 1880.

Returning to Florida, Dr. Darnes established a thriving practice in Jacksonville, where he became a beacon of hope during the devastating 1888 yellow fever epidemic. His dedication to public health and community service earned him deep respect across racial lines—his funeral was the largest in the city’s history at that time, with 3,000 attendees.

We honor Dr. Darnes’ legacy as a medical pioneer who paved the way for future generations of Black physicians. 🌿💙

🔬 Spotlight on Black Medical Trailblazers 🔬
This Black History Month, we celebrate the groundbreaking contributions of Florida’s Black pioneers in healthcare. Dr. William B. Sawyer (November 23, 1886 – 1950), a protégé of W. E. B. Du Bois, founded Miami’s first hospital for African Americans and established a hotel in what was then Colored Town (now Overtown). 🎗️ January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month 🎗️
While cervical cancer rates in the U.S. have declined in recent decades, it remains a significant health concern. The National Cancer Institute projects that 13,820 individuals will be diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2024, and more than 4,360 lives will be lost to this disease. Black and Hispanic women, as well as those in low-income and rural communities, face higher risks.
The good news? Cervical cancer is largely preventable! 💉
HPV Vaccines Save Lives: Nearly all cervical cancer cases are caused by high-risk strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). The Gardasil 9 vaccine, offered at our health center, protects against nine of the 12 high-risk HPV strains. This vaccine is recommended for both women and men.
Screenings Are Essential: Regular pap smears can detect abnormal cells that could indicate cancer, and high-risk HPV testing can identify infections before they cause harm.
