PolarisAR is a privately held startup based in Miami, founded in 2020. The company is developing a new class of mixed-reality surgical technology designed to optimize intraoperative workflows and improve patient outcomes using advanced, three-dimensional spatial computing algorithms. Its first product is the STELLAR Knee mixed-reality surgical guidance system, cleared by the FDA in 2023 for total

knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures. STELLAR Knee offers a mixed-reality platform that comprehensively assesses bony anatomy and soft tissue to ensure precise extension and flexion gap resections. By combining the benefits of robot-like precision with the simplicity of a mixed-reality headset, Polaris aims to transform the landscape of orthopedic surgery.

Proud to share PolarisAR Inc.’s latest research, led by Columbia Orthopedics, on the role of mixed reality (MR) in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The study was presented at the Northeast Arthroplasty Conference.

We’re incredibly grateful to collaborate with such a talented team of surgeon-developers and researchers: Nana O. Sarpong, MD, MBA (pictured), Michael A. Hewitt (pictured), H. John Cooper, MD, Carl L. Herndon, MD, Catelyn Woelfle, and Anthony H. Zou, MD, MBA.

This study adds to the growing body of evidence supporting MR as a precise and cost-effective surgical enabling technology, offering comparable capabilities to robotic systems in a streamlined, wearable format.

Key Findings:
-Mixed-reality TKA (MR-TKA) using the STELLAR Knee system showed improved femoral resection accuracy versus accelerometer-based guidance (AB-TKA)
-No differences were found in range of motion or complication
-MR-TKA was associated with a longer operative time, likely due to added alignment checks
