Start moving today! Incorporating exercise into your everyday life can feel daunting and overwhelming, especially when you don't know where to start. The first step is to decide you want to and go from there! Here are five easy ways to begin:

When we stop tolerating dysfunction and start setting clear boundaries, we inconvenience people in our lives who benefited from the “no boundaries” version of ourselves.

Keep this in mind on your journey

“With practice, we can see that our wounded child is not only us. Our wounded child may represent several generations. Our mother may have suffered throughout her life. Our father may have suffered. Perhaps our parents weren’t able to look after the wounded child in themselves. So when we’re embracing the wounded child in us, we are embracing all the wounded child in our past generations. This practice is not a practice for ourselves alone, but for numberless generations of ancestors and descendants.”
~Thich Nhat Hanh

Parents can offer assistance and support to help their children better manage life’s challenges by being available, listening actively and responding thoughtfully.

Focusing on your mental health doesn’t mean having to sacrifice your ambitions. It’s about understanding what is most important to you, and what you can handle.

The metaphor is this:

If you find yourself asking “Well, what am I supposed to do when my kid throws things/hits me/gets mad/screams?” over and over and over, start reflecting. Is there a pattern of any kind? Is there a precursor of any kind?

(I’ve had parents look straight at me and tell me “No, it’s completely random. There is no pattern or trigger.” Hint: they’ve never been right.)

“Go upstream” is an easy shorthand for, “Look into the issue, look into what came BEFORE the issue, and figure out how to solve it.” You might solve it by teaching the kid a new skill; you might solve it by creating an accommodation or changing the environment. You cannot solve it by making the kid feel badly for how they behaved when they had fallen into a river.

Researchers say that the most important skill you can help your child to develop is self-control. A study of 1,000 children showed that the amount of self-control that a child has predicts health, wealth, and crime rates at the age of 32. Self-control can predict those things better than intelligence or social class can.

We know that some kids just naturally need more help with self-control than others. Studies show that between 50 and 90% of self-control is dictated by genetics, but we also know that self-control is tied to the structure and function of the brain’s prefrontal cortex. The formation of the prefrontal cortex is set in motion by genetics, but is also susceptible to environmental influences. That means that the part of self-control that’s not genetically regulated is learned through experience.

Management of the self is not easy and developing the skills necessary for self-control is a long process. Neuroimaging studies show us that the development of more mature, controlled behavior continues throughout adolescence and into adulthood. These self-control skills fall under the term ‘executive function’, and they encompass the majority of the tasks parents are constantly reminding their children to do: pay attention, listen, remember, keep track of things.

But our focus shouldn’t be solely on self-control for life success. Self-control is about not acting—not speaking out in class, not telling your aunt she looks fat in that dress, not hitting back. But we need kids who can act as well as not act—Kids with great self-regulation skills, not just with good self-control.

As parents, we can help our kids have those self-control experiences in a mindful way, and together, we can move towards something even more important to lifelong happiness: self-regulation. Someone with great self-regulation is flexible and self-aware—they not only have the self-control to stifle their gut first response, but can then also weigh complex cognitive and social aspects in the situation, creatively think about how to act differently, and be self-aware enough to decide to act in a different way. It taps into not only decision making, but also creativity and empathy.
