"Shimmering Sail” / Calculating and deeply intelligent, sailfish work together to corral “bait balls” of sardines off Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula in one of the most impressive displays of teamwork within our ocean. These athletes of the deep have the unique ability to fold their dorsal fins to increase speed and snap them open like a fan to frighten their quarry. Then they strike—streaming through the depths in a flash of orange and iridescent blue and slicing the ball into more manageable sizes. I cannot imagine dragging such a magnificent and clever animal onto a boat for bragging rights, or worse, to showcase as a lifeless trophy. I much prefer to see them thriving beneath the surface and supporting our ocean’s complex ecosystems.
