These photos & videos I’ve been sharing are from ’s birth last year, captured by the amazing . Jocelyn was truly the strongest birthing badass during her daughter’s long delivery. Jocelyn dilated quicker than expected, arriving to the hospital at 8cm! The biggest challenge though, was her 5-hours of pushing time!! But with her midwive’s confident reassurance after every push, “you can do this, you’re making progress, stay with it” she was able to cross the finish line and meet her baby.

This birth story highlights the importance of choosing your provider and hospital WISELY. I have personally seen c-sections called simply because mom had been pushing for 3 hours. Mom & baby were doing great, but hospital policy said nope, times up! 🚩🚩🚩 But it doesn’t have to be that way. Ask direct questions about hospital and doctor policy early on, so you can look for red flags and transfer care if needed. Ask a doula or other moms in your community about providers who may align with your goals. This one was with Dr. S***t & her team of amazing midwives at Broward Health.

Birth Toolkit: Essential Oils ✅

“Mmm smells so good in here” has to be the most common comment from nurses who step into my clients birth rooms! I often use essential oils to help my clients realign to the present moment, and come back to their bodies through their sense of smell.

I either place the bottle right under their nose, or place a paper towel with a few drops behind my handheld fan. I don’t find lugging around a diffuser to be necessary.

My go-to oils & their purpose —
💎 Peppermint: best for relieving nausea, and smells a heck of a lot better than rubbing alcohol
🍊 Citrus Bliss: best for increasing energy and focus
🪻 Clary Sage: aids in establishing frequent contraction pattern
🌼 Chamomile, Frankincense & Lavender: all excellent for relaxation and periods of rest
🧘🏻‍♀️ Balance by DoTerra: I adore this scent for it’s centering vibes and ability to reignite confidence

Make sure you’re purchasing from a reputable, sustainable brand such as DoTerra, Mountain Rose Herbs, & Plant Therapy.

Birth Toolkit: Counter Pressure ✅

Applying pressure to the sacrum during contractions can be an absolute game changer! During labor, when baby’s descent puts intense pressure on the pelvis, applying counter pressure on that spot can create a huge amount of relief. As a doula, my hands know exactly where to find that sweet spot in any position.

Partners tip: this is a technique must be taught and practiced, so you’re ready when your partner needs it most. In Birth Bootcamp, we discuss tips for perfecting this technique. Such as timing & hand placement, which can look like this ✋ or 👊 or 👐 or like this 🫷

When Ale learned she needed an induction at 37 weeks due to hypertension, it was just the first of many surprises this birth journey would bring. With baby still transverse, the path ahead felt uncertain, to say the least. But then came the first moment of magic when baby turned head down on her own, right before a scheduled ECV. It was the first of many times baby seemed to be letting it known, “don’t worry mom, I’ve got this” ✨💞

The journey was slow and steady, (as to be expected with an early induction). We spent a full day and night trying all the positions to get baby to engage in the pelvis. Even with an epidural, Ale followed my lead, allowing me to get her in all sorts of positions to help things move along.

Several cervical checks along the way showed an unchanged cervix, still at 5cm. She was fortunate to be cared by the must unrushed & supportive OBs in Miami, allowing Ale to surrender to the process. She stayed present and positive, continuing her journey in full trust of her body and baby.

After much rest & movement, supported by her mom, husband and myself..the pivotal moment arrived..intense pressure building, baby descending, but no doctor in sight, which took mom out of her body and into her head. I whispered in her ear “you’ve got this, this is all you” and refocused on staying present with her body’s overwhelming urge to push. Doctor arrived, and baby soon after. The most joyful words erupted from mom. “I did it I did it I did it!!!” Both mom and myself had tears running down our cheeks. It was a career changing moment for me. Walking alongside Ale as she rose to every single challenge her labor presented her was one of the greatest honors of my career.

Ale said to me in our postpartum visit when discussing her daughter’s delivery, “her birth has inspired me to do really bold things”. Her birth clarified the sacred truth that birth has a way of presenting us with exactly the challenges we need to discover the strength we’ll carry into motherhood. Thank you Ale for trusting me to witness your redemptive birth journey! 💗

Great review from Lauren... "I reached out to Rachel just 6 weeks prior to my due date, unsure if it was too late to hire a doula. I had a fairly traumatic first birth experience (without a doula) that ended up in a c section, a birth I could barely recollect, and a painful recovery. I knew a different outcome was possible. During the first part of my pregnancy, I was unsure about attempting a VBAC (mostly doubting my chances of success), but I really listened to my intuition and became more resolved in doing my best to avoid surgery as I got closer to my due date. In addition to arming myself with more knowledge this time around to better advocate for myself in the hospital, I knew I needed a great support team. After one meeting with Rachel it was clear she was a great fit for me. She is highly knowledgeable but also low key, calm energy that immediately puts you at ease and helps you to feel empowered regardless of how things unfold. She really follows her clients lead and supports them in their decisions without judgement or convincing, rather than having her own agenda. Having Rachel with me in advance of and during my labor was so calming, and I know her support allowed an easier delivery. It also allowed my husband to just be present during the birth of our daughter rather than feeling like he had to have a ‘job’. I really cannot recommend Rachel highly enough."
