AI privacy question: I'd been cautioned about chatting with AI bots, because the contents could become public record and accessible to others. Just now, however, in Claude, I checked out what happens after selecting the "Publish" button and received this notification. It seems to indicate the contents of our chat would remain private, along with the results -- unless / until I proactively choose to "Publish" the artifact that Claude produced. Should I be reassured by this?

Don't "go it alone!"

Running your own business can be lonely and isolating.

Here is what I have learned about joining a group of other like-minded solopreneurs:

1. It helps you clarify and validate your values, beliefs, and intentions.

2. It provides critical support and reinforcement to keep you on track and energize you when you start to wobble.

3. It offers you a place to "think out loud," articulate your ideas about your business, and get input from others -- to fill in "blind spots" and reveal things you don't see yourself.

4. It's motivational and inspirational when members of the group support and encourage each other.

5. It creates meaningful connections, friendships, and potential business and collaboration opportunities.

I am now working with "LightClub" and finding the experience transformational. Maybe you will too!

Don't get this WRONG!

Yes absolutely: volume is a key element of public speaking that can affect your IMPACT on an audience.

But that doesn't necessarily mean you want to SPEAK LOUD to get people's attention.

I don't know about you, but I don't like feeling I'm being yelled at!

The point about volume is not how high it is, but how DYNAMIC it is.

Suddenly lowering your voice while speaking is among the most effective ways to gain and retain people's attention.

In fact, when you speak more softly, it gets listeners to "lean in" and pay even closer attention to what you're saying!

Try it – and let me know what you think: if you agree, type "SPEAK LOW" in the Comments!

Knowing a script or presentation cold means taking the time to craft the words and sequence of what you plan to say, and then rehearsing them until you could recite them backwards if asked. It’s a more effective approach to public speaking than simple memorization or “winging it” because you p...

YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

It’s natural and common to be anxious and fearful about getting up in front of others to speak or present.

Even we professional speakers often suffer from these feelings.

The only difference is how well you learn to cope.

It absolutely *IS* something you CAN learn.

How often have you heard the advice to “take a deep breath”? It’s real; it’s backed by science; and it WORKS.

Simple deep breathing — before and even while you speak — is an extremely effective way to calm your own nerves.

You ALWAYS want to be on your "A" Game -- because you never know when your past will pay off.

She needed to find a teaching job in Miami RIGHT AWAY. I spent hours with her revising her resume — which she hadn’t touched in many years.

It’s hard to describe how stressed she was. The Job Fair was the following day — but she hadn’t registered by the deadline; she was taking her chances as a walk-in.

She texted me from the site — where the line stretched around the block.

She was fearing the worst.

The next time I spoke to her, she was holding a Provisional Contract!

She told me she’d quickly been spotted by a Principal she knew from a previous position as an external vendor to the School District. When she told the Principal she was seeking a teaching job, the Principal immediately brought her to the Intake table and gave her some forms to fill out to apply for an existing opening -- and offered her the job on the spot!

Then, the Principal did something truly remarkable.

She brought the newly-hired teacher over to someone else they both knew and said, “Look who we got! We got her!”

WOW. Talk about feeling VALUED!

That's how good an impression she had made YEARS earlier.

You ALWAYS want to be on your "A" game: you never know when your past will pay off.

It was my final year of studying journalism at NYU. I was plugged into the New York City nightlife scene, with its "pop-up" parties.

On February 14, 1982, at "The Valentine Room," an artist was drawing caricatures.

I had mine done; the artist asked what scene I wanted to be placed in.

You can see what I requested.

It was my dream to work at CBS -- "The Tiffany Network" -- and follow in the footsteps of such luminary journalistic titans as Edward R. Murrow; Walter Cronkite; Dan Rather.

14 months after this caricature was drawn, I was, in reality, sitting in front of a newsroom typewriter at the CBS flagship station, WCBS–TV.

(Over the next decade, I would rise through the ranks to become Weekend Producer, before leaving NYC to pursue an on-air career.)

It's just one of several times over the years that I have visualized something that later manifested in real life.

It reminds me of the lyrics from the Rocky Horror Picture Show: "don't dream it, be it."

I can't tell you how,
And there's no guarantee.
But this is what actually
Happened to me.

In my TEDx Talk, I explain how the elements we all recognize about music serve as guideposts for effective public speaking.

Knowing how to use this insight can make you a rockstar on the stage!

There are three forms of human communication: verbal, visual, and vocal.

Verbal is words: the lyrics to a song; the script to your speech. Just like a talented troubadour, you can engage your audience by telling stories your listeners can relate to.

Visually, your hand gestures and body language can captivate a crowd, just like the stage show of a superstar singer.

Vocal variety makes you a truly dynamic speaker. Vary your pitch, volume, rhythm, speed, tone. Mix it up to keep your audience on the edge of their seats!

And just like any performer, practice is critical for polishing your delivery, gaining confidence, and conquering your fears.
