Advocacy Network on Disabilities Since 1972, Miami-Dade County's lead agency to plan, provide, and coordinate services to individuals. Working for a world where we all belong

About the Advocacy Network with Disabilities

THE ADVOCACY NETWORK ON DISABILITIES champions the rights of individuals with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities by promoting inclusion, providing services, and advancing systems change. Long before “collaboration” and “partnering” were buzz words, these principles were the foundation upon which The Advocacy Network on Disabilities was founded. Since its beginnings as a subcommittee of South Florida's Health Planning Council in the early 1970s, The Advocacy Network on Disabilities has been a coalition of individuals with disabilities; family members; advocates; community service providers; and other public, private and governmental organizations. With an original focus on individuals with developmental disabilities, today the organization also provides supports and services to individuals with physical, sensory and other disabilities. Our mission is simple: “In partnership with people with disabilities and their families, The Advocacy Network on Disabilities advocates, coordinates and provides supports and services.”

Through facilitating community collaboration, fostering self-advocacy, and promoting acceptance, The Advocacy Network on Disabilities goals include:

1) Helping individuals identify and access supports and services;

2) Bringing unmet needs to the attention of decision-makers and advocating for change;

3) Providing expertise about best practices and specialized resources; and

4) Conducting outreach, education, and professional development activities. The Advocacy Network on Disabilities has a proven track record of excellence. Since 1975, its funders have continuously found the organization in compliance with both programmatic and administrative contract requirements. Consumer Satisfaction Surveys indicate that 96% of respondents are satisfied with the help they receive from us.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month! 💼✨
This year, we celebrate the talent, creativity, and resilience that people with disabilities bring to the workplace. 💪🌍 When workplaces are inclusive by design, everyone benefits.
Let’s continue working toward a future where accessibility isn’t an afterthought—it’s the foundation. Because employment is not just about jobs; it’s about dignity, independence, and belonging. 💙💚

✨ Today in Disability Rights History ✨
On September 26, 1973, the Rehabilitation Act was signed into law! 🎉
This was a big win — especially Section 504, which made it illegal for programs and employers receiving federal funds to discriminate against people with disabilities. 💪
Why does it matter? Because this Act opened doors to education, jobs, healthcare, and public life — paving the way for the ADA years later.
We celebrate this milestone while remembering there’s still work ahead to make sure inclusion and accessibility are the default everywhere. 🌍♿💜

🎉 Today in 2008 — a win for disability rights!
On September 25, 2008, President George W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act into law. This landmark act restored the intent of the original ADA to be broad and inclusive—ensuring that people with disabilities are protected even if their impairment is episodic, in remission, or mitigated by medicine or devices.
📢 If you'd like to know more, we have an upcoming ADA training via Zoom!
October 17th — An Administrator’s Overview of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) hosted through The Children’s Trust Academy.

✨ Last week, we had the opportunity to present at Centro Campesino on Introduction to Inclusion for Families.
It was a wonderful turnout and a meaningful way to begin the new school year with a focus on inclusion, disability awareness, resources, and partnership. 💙💚
📋 Four families completed Resource Request Forms, which will be given to our Family Development Team for direct follow-up. Families may also call us at 305-596-1160 for assistance.
We are grateful to Barbara and the Centro Campesino staff for their dedication to inclusion of children with disabilities and their families. We look forward to working alongside you this year!

✋🌍 Today is the International Day of Sign Languages!
This year’s theme — “No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights” — reminds us that sign languages are not optional, they are essential.
Recognizing and protecting sign languages means protecting human rights. When Deaf people and sign language users are included, our communities become more equitable, diverse, and connected.
Let’s honor this day by:
🤟 Learning and sharing a few signs
🤟 Advocating for interpreters and captioning
🤟 Supporting Deaf-led organizations
Every sign matters. Every voice matters. 💙

"Legislative efforts, including the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act, the Ensuring Nationwide Access to Better Life Experience (ENABLE) Act, and the Marriage Equality for Disabled Adults Act, aim to expand autonomy and equity for the disabled community. However, they expose a grim truth: in the United States, disabled people can have the right to life, or liberty, or the pursuit of happiness; never more than one at a time."
