🪞Grab your Mirror!

Tongue Position 👅
👉🏼 Pull the back of your tongue up and put your tongue tip down.
👉🏼 Pull your tongue towards the back of your mouth.

Voice OFF 🔇
👉🏼 Keep your voice off!

Sound like a cat hissing? 🐈
👉🏼 Tap the back of your tongue to the roof of your mouth.

Difficulty with tongue retraction?
👉🏼 Lay on your back and lightly tap your throat.

Let’s talk about Sensory Bin Fillers, Themes, Vocabulary, and Actions!

Sensory Bin Fillers
👉🏼 Use almost anything in your bins. Be sensitive to the child’s sensory preferences and needs.
👉🏼 Create wet, dry, edible, and nature bins!

Sensory Bin Themes
👉🏼 Create your bin to fit the season, holiday, favorite sport or TV show! Build rapport and get the buy in!

Sensory Bin Vocabulary
👉🏼 Expand vocabulary by talking about your senses. Most of the examples are adjectives!
👉🏼 What do you see, feel, smell, and hear?

Toy of the Week: Pop the Pig 🐷

Let’s talk about vocabulary, sequencing, and changing the routine!

Model Vocabulary!

Physically and Verbally Model Sequences

Change the Routine
⭐️Here are easy ways to make “Pop the Pig” exciting again and again!
👉🏼 Add an obstacle course - each step takes place after each movement (e.g., hop roll die, crawl find color, etc.)
👉🏼 Add Sensory - Place each game piece in a sensory bin like rice or beans
👉🏼 Hide and Seek Pig - Take turns hiding the pig between turns to extend play time
👉🏼 Hop while you Pop - Add movement like hopping each time you push down on the Pig
👉🏼 Become the Pig - Take turns being the pig. Use a basket as your “belly,” take turns filling the basket with balls, the pig decides when he “pops” and dumps out the balls
👉🏼 Add Rules - Is this game too easy?! What about when you add a reverse or lose a turn? Not so easy anymore! 😜

Milestone Mondays!

This week: Speech Sound Acquisition by Age

A child should accurately say ALL of their sounds by 7 years old. 90% of children accurately say ALL of their sounds by 7 years old. The other 10% should be receiving support.

If a child does not accurately produce their speech sounds by the ages above, they may need support form a speech language pathologist.

3 tips for “J” sound

Tongue Position 👅
👉🏼 Flip your tongue up and put it behind your upper front teeth. It should be near the bumpy part right behind your upper front teeth. This is called the alveolar ridge. Saying the “D” sound will help with tongue placement. This step is very important because it creates a seal that increases air pressure.

Bite Down and Round Your Lips 😗
👉🏼 Bite down and round your lips just like you do for the “CH” sound. Make sure your tongue stays up!

Voice ON 🗣
👉🏼 What’s the difference between the “CH” and “J” sound? Voicing! Turn your voice on.

Air Flow 🌬
👉🏼 Push air out quickly to make the strong “J” sound. An easy “hack” ~ say an intense “D” sound to help understand air pressure.

How easy is that?!

Milestone Mondays!

This week: 1-3 years old

Expected Number of Words

Save this one!

Language milestones are helpful to identify language delays. Identifying the number of words a child says is one of many language milestones to keep an eye on. Developmental milestones are based on 90% of children within a specific age group having the skill. That means only 10% of children do not have the skill. Therefore, milestones represent the vast majority and missing a milestone may be a cause for concern.

Milestones do not reflect the average performance of children. The average performance (about 50% of children with a skill) helps parents and therapists better understand developmental norms. Norms are important when considering the development of a child.

For example: A 15-month-old child meets the language milestone of saying 2 words. A parent may be excited because their child met their language milestone. In only 3 months, the same child is expected to say at least 20 words. That is 18 additional words. If the parent was aware of the 50% average or 10 words at 15 months, they may be less excited but could focus more on their child’s language development.
