🎉 Exciting News! 🎉

Our partner HOSS (who provides the gray pouch hygiene kits) has collaborated with FIGS to gift our MSM team with facemasks, tote bags, and scrub sets 👕🩺. They were also kind enough to gift us with which our team can really use during our street runs in sunny Miami.

The purpose of this donation is to support medical students, physicians, healthcare professionals, and related staff in their outreach efforts.

Please follow and check out to see the work that they’re doing and how you can support their initiatives. And once again, thank you HOSS!

📢Announcement: Care Coordinator of the Quarter!

We are proud to recognize Rhea Kulkarni as our Care Coordinator of the Quarter! Rhea has gone above and beyond in advocating for her patient and ensuring continuity of care through every challenge.

When faced with the challenge of a patient needing identification but having no documents, Rhea took the initiative to make multiple phone calls to Puerto Rico and successfully assisted in obtaining the patient’s birth certificate. She later helped him obtain a Florida ID which will allow him access to more resources. She showed exceptional resourcefulness by arranging an interpreter (Nelson Guzman) to communicate with the Social Security Administration on his behalf and even provided her personal phone number as a point of contact so the patient could reliably access services.

Her dedication didn’t stop there—Rhea accompanied the patient to his P*P appointment just hours before boarding an international flight. Even while on her month-long vacation in Italy, she continued to answer calls from the patient’s P*P, schedule appointments, and communicate updates with the Case Manager. When contact with the patient was lost, Rhea tracked him down through collaboration with a Social Worker at Jackson and discovered he was in a short-term rehabilitation facility. She then followed up with the facility to monitor his treatment and length of stay.

Currently, Rhea is working closely with the patient’s insurance company to secure an electric wheelchair. From start to finish, she has demonstrated unwavering persistence, creativity, and compassion.

Please join us in celebrating Rhea for her tireless efforts and outstanding service. Her work truly exemplifies what care coordination is all about.

👏 Congratulations, Rhea!

Our team was out in the community providing essential care and screenings for our neighbors today:

👁️ Eye Exams
💉 Blood pressure checks
🦶 Foot care, including treatment for a patient with foot fungus
🩸 Glucose testing

We also partnered with Nadien from The Frame Project , who conducted vision screenings and gifted three patients with new eyeglasses—helping them see clearly again 👓💙

Miami Street medicine is more than a check-in, it’s empowerment.

We met a patient struggling with asthma who didn’t know how to properly use her inhaler. We took the time to walk her through it, step by step, until she felt confident.

This is care. This is dignity. This is MSM.

Join us on Tuesday February 4th in the 4th floor auditorium of RMSB to engage in a discussion and Q & A with Dr. Echenique as she teaches us about IPV screening and trauma informed care for patients experiencing homelessness. This event is mandatory for all students in Miami Street Medicine who go on street runs, if you cannot make it a zoom recording will be available afterwards. Lunch will be provided. Looking forward to seeing many of you there!

Our Street Classroom Advanced Clinical Elective (ACE) provides a unique experience for University of Miami Miller students in the care of our unhoused patient population. Students have the opportunities to develop medical skills used in atypical social and envionmental situations, identify barriers and coordinate outreach strategies, and manage problems related to mental health and substance use.

We recently had the pleasure of hosting our first ever Street Classroom ACE students. Thuy Vi and Ryan have been joining us at the urgent care, on street rounds, and our community organizing events this past month! They both jumped right in and quickly established themselves as critical members of our teams. We are so proud of you both ❤️

Street Classroom ACE students will continue to work with with the Dade County Street Response student staff, case managers, and other members of the multi-disciplinary outreach health care team. The primary function of DCSR is in social justice and solidarity - not in the creation of volunteer or student learning opportunities. However, we believe it is possible to offer an ethical balance of teaching/learning while providing critical social services.
