Dr. Rob Poliszuk PT, DPT, CSCS IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THIS WAY
Working 40+ hours a week can often leave us stiff, weak and feeling a little out of whack. Maybe this is just how it is? No.

Working out following a 8-6 day can be exhausting and painful, with each little ache and itch acting up with even the simplest movements. Maybe you are just at that age? It doesn't have to be this way. Ideally, following a long day of work, we strep it into second gear and pound out a great workout that leaves us feeling great and exhausted! Sadly, this is not typically the case. Nothing is more frustrating than not being able to train as hard as we would like or simply being unable to do basic exercises in the gym due to nagging aches and pains, exacerbated from our long work weeks. This is why I created DrRP.com! I don't believe anybody should have their fitness goals cut short by the wear and tear or a career! That is where programming and collaborating with a doctor of physical therapy can have its benefits. ABOUT ME
Hi, my name is Rob Poliszuk and I am a Physical Therapist (DPT) and a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and my ambition for all of my followers is to achieve their health and fitness goals while also restoring proper movement patterns, correct imbalances, and address ergonomic concerns that are related to the wear and tear of the common business professional or laborer. Utilizing my awareness of typical conditions that affect the typical worker in both sedentary and physically demanding work, I can properly structure fitness programs to be both effective and healthy for any of your goals. Personal training, whether it be online or in person, should be just that, PERSONAL. That means effective progressive overload and gains, but also preventative habilitative and therapeutic exercises to keep you moving well and feeling better as you do so. While in Physical Therapy school I also had the opportunity to shadow and work alongside some of the most well respected practitioners in my field. Working with amputees, olympic and collegiate athletes, pediatric and geriatric, obese and overweight, back pain and neck pain patients and everyone in between, I have also seen a wide range of patients and continue to be exposed to and learn new treatment techniques and pathologies, daily. It is this experience that is necessary to grow as a practitioner, as each client presents with a different cluster of co-morbidities and symptoms that have to be taken into account when structuring any plan of care or routine. EDUCATIONAL AND INSPIRATIONAL BACKGROUND
In 2013, I graduated summa cm laude with a bachelors of science (BS) in exercise science from SUNY Cortland. While in my pursuits at my undergraduate school, I participated in the running of corporate wellness challenges, fitness club programs and personal training of fellow students. This is when I really began to discover my itch to learn about the human body in greater depth than what a bachelors degree can provide alone. With each little piece of knowledge I acquired, I realized that there was so much more to learn about the human body, its response to exercise and which factors we could control and manipulate to optimize human movement as a whole, while achieving the fitness and lifestyle goals of my clients. Following my year off from undergraduate school, in which I personally trained and served as a wellness coach at Rochester General Hospital in Rochester, New York, I decided that I was not done in my higher education pursuits. This past May, I graduated from the Doctor of Physical Therapy program of the University of Miami. It was at UM that I learned how to examine each individual patient and client, develop a focused plan of care, utilize my knowledge of the human body and carry through that plan of care that addressed the functional deficits of my clients and also encouraged increased mobility, pain reduction, and a capacity for a more active and healthy lifestyle. COLLIDING WORLDS FOR YOUR BENEFIT

Although physical therapists are experts in human movement and anatomy, they tend to neglect the world of optimizing the personal training regimens and progression of patients beyond that, being a patient. However, this cannot be blamed on the practitioner as once a patient's insurance provider determines that they are functional enough to perform all daily activities, they no longer help pay for the cost of physical therapy. Conversely, proficient personal trainers and strength coaches tend to have an enormous amount of knowledge and experience on how to optimize the performance and physiques of their clients, but often lack all the ability to correctly identify many of the pitfalls in movement or static postures that can lead to possible injury, disability or pain when continued unchecked. This is why I find it so important to combine aspects of my DPT and CSCS in the treatment of my clients. Having experience in treating patients and clients in both the worlds of physical therapy and personal training, I am able to utilize aspects from each discipline to aide in the other. This is something that can fill in the gaps between the two professions and lead to even greater outcomes in the long run for anybody looking to reach their fitness goals while also remaining healthy in the process.

Shoulder pain is a common problem, especially for people who are active. There are many different things that can cause shoulder pain, but one common cause is weak rotator cuff muscles.

In this video, Dr. Rob explains how to strengthen the rotator cuff muscles to help relieve shoulder pain. He recommends doing exercises like external and internal rotation, face pulls, push-ups, and rowing.

The pain you are feeling in the front of your shoulder is likely biceps tendinitis. This is typically compounded with rotator cuff weakness. Try this exercis...

Shoulder training can be a double-edged sword.

Sure, everyone loves those side raises with thumbs down to hit the lateral deltoids, but lurking in the shadows is a nasty villain: impingement. Internal rotation from those thumb-down movements puts stress on your rotator cuff, potentially leading to painful pinching in the front of your shoulder. Dealing with subacromial impingement? Not fun. Rehab can be a long, frustrating journey.

Your kneecap could be tracking in a way that is causing your knee pain to get worse!

โ€‹โ€‹Typically, asymmetries are not the end of the world. There is a normal amount of variation amongst people but when you see movement like this with knee pain congruent with the tracking issue then you know it is something you need to look into more.

So how did this particular patient develop this issue? Well, she was an avid runner with a history of right hip pain. Over time she adjusted her running technique to favor the left side.

โ€‹โ€‹This led to asymmetries all up and down the left pelvis, hips, knees and ankles which only really manifested itself as pain about two weeks prior to this video being taken!
โ€‹
So what are you to do if you are a runner and notice glaring asymmetries, a hitch in you form or even pain? Look towards a qualified physio to address your weaknesses and mech axis before your caught up in the chronic pain zone.

We see a more lateral/diagonal shift of the patella when she squeezes her left quad and a more superior-compression only movement on the right.

We like to blame the lower back, but it was more important for her to address very small musculature located in her gluteal region.

Your hips are the key to a lot of really awesome activities, if you know what I meanโ€ฆ Do I have to spell this out anymore? Don't make me. It's getting weird now.
Despite having strong hips in traditional ranges, some individuals continue to experience pain. This could be due to weakness in deep hip flexor/adductor muscles that manifest in non-traditional tests.

Side note ๐Ÿ“ the hip flexors are not just your iliopsoas and re**us femoris (the ones everyone talks about) but muscles like adductor magnus, adductor longus, gracilus, sartorius also contribute to hip flexion. โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € Similarly, hip abduction is not just Glute and Glute med wo...

Sure, squats and deadlifts activate the glutes in different positions, but the hip thrust is an excellent exercise to get a maximal glute contraction in the hips extended position, something that is overlooked in most programming.

Too many times, we say things like just do a squad or just dead lift, and you will grow amazing glutes. Unfortunately, this is not the case. There are too many other muscles that played during his exercises, and if you really want to have strong, effective gluteal muscles doing things at the barbell hip thrust in which the hardest part of the movement is when you were at the top and most extended, his position could be a helpful and very effective additional exercise to your program.

In a study by Worrel et al. 2015, it was shown that this was a significant advantage for the hip thrust exercise via EMG testing. This could be possibly due to the hips extended position + being perpendicular with the pull of gravity during the hardest part of the lift making it a novel and targeted
