🩸 SEPTEMBER – Raising Strong Kids with Bleeding Disorders

Parenting a child with a bleeding disorder brings unique challenges — and incredible strength. 💪

🎒 Back-to-School Tip:
An Individualized Health Plan (IHP) helps ensure your child’s medical needs are met at school. It can outline:
âś… Emergency contacts & care instructions
âś… Bleeding disorder management steps
âś… Medication or treatment needs
âś… Activity restrictions or precautions

Work with your child’s healthcare team and school staff to create or update their IHP so everyone is prepared for a safe, successful school year. 📚🍎

The new school year begins August 15 in Miami-Dade — and for students with bleeding disorders, that means a little extra preparation. Here are a few key reminders:
• 📋 Make sure your child has an updated Individualized Health Plan (IHP) on file with their school.
• 🩺 Take time to meet with the school nurse, teachers, and P.E. staff to ensure they understand your child’s needs.
• 🎒 Consider sending a small “bleeding disorder kit” if recommended by your HTC provider — gauze, gloves, or a treatment protocol can go a long way in an emergency.

Wishing all of our families a strong start to the school year.

Let’s help each other start the year informed and empowered.

We’re excited to share the success of our very first Water Aerobics session in collaboration with the Florida Bleeding Disorders Association! 🏊‍♂️✨

Designed for individuals with Hemophilia, this inclusive event offered a fun, joint-friendly way to stay active in a safe and supportive environment. The turnout was amazing, and the positive feedback tells us—we’re just getting started!

👉 Stay tuned for our next session coming this September, featuring HTC Physical Therapist Dr. Kelli Fraga leading a hands-on Water Safety Lesson!

Let’s keep moving toward a healthier future—together! 💪🌊

It is with deep love and great sorrow that your HTC team shares the passing of Dr. Michael Tidwell on April 9 in Colorado.

Dr. Tidwell was the founding pediatric orthopedist for our Pediatric HTC, serving since its inception in 1987. He brought not only remarkable skill and knowledge, but also boundless compassion and a fierce dedication to our children and the bleeding disorders community.

Even after moving to Miami Children’s Hospital, Dr. Tidwell remained a vital part of our Comprehensive Clinic—always generous with his time, answering questions, solving problems, and lending support. At a time when hemophilia care was just beginning to evolve—and during the darkest days of the 1980s and '90s—he stood by our families with unwavering empathy.

His warm smile, kind spirit, and deep humanity lit up every clinic visit. He was more than a doctor—he was an advocate, a mentor, and a beloved friend.

He will be profoundly missed.
