Breathing is a natural thing: breathe in, breathe out…not much to it, right? Well, guess what: there actually is a wrong and right way to get oxygen into your system through your lungs. Below, Mark Courtney, a respiratory therapist with the American Lung Association's Lung HelpLine, gives some tips on how to get the most out of your lungs.

Proper breathing starts in the nose and then moves to the stomach as your diaphragm contracts, the belly expands and your lungs fill with air. "It is the most efficient way to breathe, as it pulls down on the lungs, creating negative pressure in the chest, resulting in air flowing into your lungs."

How do I keep healthy lungs?

Our lungs do a lot for us and are mostly a self-cleaning organ. But due to our ill habits of smoking and the increasing air pollution, our lungs are exposed to harmful pollutants and microbes that get deposited from the air we inhale. Common lung diseases and respiratory problems such as asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, and cystic fibrosis may occur and damage our lungs further. To keep the lungs healthy, regular detoxification of this vital organ is very necessary. After all, it is the organ that helps us breathe pure air inside our body. Here’s how we can keep our lungs healthy and help them work better.

Ginger: Ginger is one of the most effective herbs to keep your lungs healthy. Its anti-inflammatory properties help clear our lungs naturally and remove toxins from the respiratory tract.

Apples: We all know that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Well, why not! It helps keep our lungs healthy as well. Loaded with nutrients, high energy, and high fiber, this low-calorie food helps in maintaining a healthy respiratory system. Its flavonoids and vitamin C-rich content help fight off lung diseases as well.

Oregano: This herb is rich in natural decongestants and histamine reducers. The usage of oregano in food aids smooth nasal airflow and better functioning of the respiratory tract.

Processed food: Processed food produce a lot of mucus and should be avoided at any cost. This damages the health of the lungs and also hurts the respiratory tract. Processed dairy products, meat, and sugar should be done away with to keep the liver healthy.

Pineapple: This tasty fruit contains a compound called bromelain. This compound helps reduce inflammation and increase lung elasticity. The better the lung elasticity, the more oxygen we can take in with deeper breaths.

Honey: Anecdotal studies suggest that honey provides many health benefits including removing pollutants from the lungs. One spoon a day will ensure that your liver is in fine fettle.

Citrus fruits and leafy veggies: Food items like lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruits, kumquats, blueberries, blackberries, etc., and leafy vegetables like Brussels sprouts, celery, asparagus, bamboo shoots, cauliflower, broccoli, thyme, rosemary, oregano, etc. can also help clean the liver and keep it healthy.

Avoid smoking: If you are a chain smoker then you are already damaging your lungs to a great extent. Quitting ci******es and alcohol can be a great step to keeping our liver healthy. Hot showers and a little yoga can also come in handy.
