Surfside one year later

This is not an easy post to write. The writing will be graphic and emotional.
June 24,2021 at 1:22am The Champlain Towers collapsed. No one who went to bed that night could ever dream that some would never wake up that day. That there beloved home would collapse and be destroyed forever. That their lives would be forever changed. That their trust in the world would be broken.

For a full month, family and friends came together at the Family Unification center praying that there loved ones would be found alive. I went with the families to the site. The site of 12 story rubble and the screams are etched in my memory forever. There is a Torah verse that says and Aaron was silent. His sons had died in a horrific “strange”fire. Many of us stood there struck silent by the horrific scene we were witnessing. The quiet sadness and tears are overwhelming for the survivors and as a peripheral bystander-me.

Time passed, First responders, The Israeli Defense Force and the rescue dogs found the bodies. Crushed. No matter who it was a child of 1, her dad and her mom (who was pregnant) crushed. The mother of the sheriff. The elderly couple.

A mom angry because the police found her daughter and son in law but only pieces. Jewish law says the body must be buried whole. Yet that was difficult because the question: do you bury what you found and open the grave when the rest of the body is found. How will this affect the primary mourners.

One Saturday I was called to notify a woman and her daughter that her husband and dog had died. How do I tell them that a beloved person and their family dog were found in the rubble? They asked for the Lord’s Prayer.

I have comforted many people from Surfside since then. There are stories of “luck” at not being home. Too often the focus has been on those who lost there lives that day. Rightly so! But focus also needs to be on the survivors coping with the grief of their neighbors being gone. Survivors who have lost their homes. For some this home was the first investment. Momentos of deceased parents and loved ones have brought on added grief.

Lately everyone is focused on the settlements just reached. There will be wrongful death payouts. There will be payouts for pain and suffering. The property will
has been sold.

What will remain is the memories of 98 people who
passed onto the other side. May their memories be a blessing.
I have learned the importance of the Psalmist who wrote Teach us to treasure each day.
