Fun Fact Friday: What’s Really in Your Sunscreen?

Ever wonder what makes sunscreen actually work? Ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide physically block UV rays, while others like avobenzone absorb harmful radiation.

🩺 Fun Fact Friday: Did you know that the stethoscope was invented in 1816 by French physician René Laennec? Before that, doctors had to place their ears directly on patients’ chests to listen to heartbeats. Laennec rolled up a piece of paper into a tube, and just like that, the first stethoscope was born! Talk about innovation in action.

Meet Dr. Albert “Bart” Whitehead, our Program Director of the College of Biomedical Sciences at Larkin University.

Dr. Whitehead leads a program designed to give students a real edge when applying to health professions schools. Modeled after the first-year curriculum of medical and dental programs, our Master’s in Biomedical Sciences includes clinical experiences, research, and exam prep.

Early-stage data from the Larkin University Summer Research Program (LUSRP)!

Emily Rivas, a student from Miami Dade College, is working under the mentorship of Professor Tom Edwards (College of Biomedical Sciences) on the recombinant expression of the nucleocapsid protein from the Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus.
The images show lab work and analysis of protein expression and purification on gels. The blue bands indicated by arrows represent the target protein.

This is just one of many impactful projects underway this summer! Through the LUSRP, 21 students from 11 different universities, colleges, and high schools, each pursuing an 8-week research project in health and biomedical sciences at Larkin University.
