It’s graduation day for our smiley Hazel! We have absolutely adored working with her. She was successful in reducing food and liquid entering into her nasal cavity, strengthening her swallow with VitalStim therapy, and increasing lip seal for straw drinking!

While we are so sad she won’t be sitting in our chair with us every week, we are so proud of how far she has come! Keep shining sweet girl! ⭐️🤍👑

✨ Three cheers for AAC! We have been working extra hard this summer for multiple patients and students to receive FULLY FUNDED devices to help them communicate in their everyday environments! This one is one of THREE fully funded devices we recieved in the past month. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Hazel gives us five stars!

The VitalStim® System is a painless non-invasive therapy for treating dysphagia, obtained by external electrical stimulation which is applied to the front of the neck (defined as such in the market by the Food and Drug Administration in 2002). VitalStim® Therapy is backed by multiple clinical studies. The VitalStim® Therapy System is the only technology approved by the FDA for restoring swallowing function in patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia. The VitalStim® Therapy System uses small electrical currents to stimulate the muscles responsible for swallowing. At the same time, trained specialists (speech therapists) help patients to re-educate their muscles through rehabilitation therapy.
The VitalStim® System is designed as a complementary treatment modality, i.e. “a certified speech therapist will apply VitalStim to the patient while working on positions, manoeuvres and exercises to retrain the swallowing mechanism”. Vital Stim combined with traditional therapy allows:
· Safer and more effective handling for patients.
· Acceleration in the recovery time from a restricted diet.
· It helps patients achieve sustained improvement and long-term results.
The lasting effect of VitalStim was validated in a three-year study submitted to the FDA, which showed the improvement in swallowing function was maintained throughout this time. Another published study showed the positive and lasting impact of VitalStim in a group of dysphagia patients in which previous attempts at treatment with conventional therapy had failed.
