Validation is a crucial interpersonal skill. It allows us to confirm or communicate understanding of our own or others’ emotions, thoughts, and/or behaviors. We often accidentally invalidate others or ourselves, communicating to others or ourselves that what we are thinking, feeling, or doing does not make sense. This post shares some examples of validating and invalidating statements.

Tip Thursday: Our thoughts can have significant power over our mood. Sometimes we get stuck in a negative thought loop consisting of more extreme words such as never or always. By embracing opposites, we can shift our mindset and mood. Dialectical thinking involves acknowledging both sides by using “and” statements instead of “but.” This allows our mind to accept that both sides are true and therefore decreases the intensity of our negative emotions.
