This Program is affiliated with both the University Of Miami Miller School Of Medicine and Jackson Health Systems. The inpatient service provides consultative services to the following hospitals within the Medical Center: Jackson Memorial Hospital (JMH) and Jackson North Hospital, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Ryder Trauma Center and the Rehabilitation Medicine Center. The patient population spans the gamut from complex primary and secondary immunodeficiencies (i.e. bone marrow and solid organ transplant recipients, oncological, perinatally and behaviorally acquired HIV patients), neonates, school-age and adolescents patients with complex infectious disease problems as well as common pediatric infectious diseases (meningitis, bacteremia, osteomyelitis, etc.). The Neonatal Service at JMH is one of the largest in the country with over 100 committed beds while the Pediatric Transplantation Service is one of the busiest in the United States. The breath and wealth of the clinical service insures that each fellow will have a well-rounded clinical experience. Each fellow rotates through the Clinical Diagnostic Microbiology laboratory, an Infection Control tutorial, and a five day long Translational Science Research “Boot Camp” or seminar to provide them with the foundations in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Each fellow is expected to become involved and complete both a Quality Improvement Project and a Research Project during their Fellowship training.
First Year
Six months of the year are dedicated to the inpatient service at Jackson Memorial Medical Center (JMMC) in which you will be responsible for inpatient consultations on a wide range of infectious diseases including community acquired infections, nosocomial infections, as well as infections in a diverse array of immunocompromised patients, i.e. HIV, bone marrow and solid organ transplantation, and oncology patients. In addition you will be expected to choose a mentor and a project in a clinical, basic or translational area of research. The remainder of the year, your responsibilities will be in the outpatient setting participating in our ambulatory clinics and divisional seminars, i.e. journal clubs, fellows case conferences, etc. Our first year fellow is required to participate in the Research Scholarly Activity Program, in order to acquire the tools and skills to develop their research project. A rotation in the Jackson Memorial Hospital Microbiology laboratory, Infection Control and Antibiotic Stewardship are scheduled in the first year as well. Each fellow is required to participate, and present at our twice weekly Divisional Teaching Seminars.
Second Year
Three months of the year will be allotted to your inpatient duties as described in the first year and the remainder will focus on your research. In addition, you are expected to lead multidisciplinary journal clubs, aid in the development of clinical care guidelines and take an active role in the education of the pediatric house staff, including presentations during “ID week” and board review sessions.
Third Year
As our senior fellow, you are responsible to schedule our divisional meetings and assist the Director with the administration of the Fellowship program, i.e. on call schedules, organizing and scheduling Divisional conferences. In addition to the presentations as described in the second year, you will be expected to give a lecture in the Pediatric Grand Rounds as a culmination of your training. Your research project is expected to be completed prior to your graduation from the program.
