“I always thought I was defective,” says Gani Espinoza, reflecting on a lifetime of depression, learning disabilities, and self-destructive habits. Nothing seemed to help, not medication and not therapy, until he met Dr. Rachel Rohaidy at Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute.

Through transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) an innovative, noninvasive therapy for treatment-resistant depression, Gani began to notice a change. His low moods did not last as long. He slept better. He felt more focused at home, at work, and with his kids.

“TMS gave me the extra thing I needed to move forward,” he says. “I do not feel defective anymore.”

Singer Justin Timberlake recently revealed he was diagnosed with Lyme disease after some backlash from fans about his world tour performances. It’s brought up conversations about the disease and, here in South Florida, if it’s a risk we need to watch out for. Here's what you need to know:

🍍“In places in the Northeast, about half the ticks during the summer can be infected with the disease; whereas, in places where there’s not a lot of Lyme disease, like Florida or Arizona, the majority of adult ticks are not infected," says Dr. Andrew Forster, internal medicine physician with Baptist Health Primary Care.

🍍Lyme Disease Symptoms include fatigue, fever, headache, and skin rash. If left untreated, Lyme disease can spread to the heart, joints and nervous system.

🍍When it comes to protecting yourself from ticks and the disease, Dr. Forster advises people to be fully covered when hiking, and to conduct tick checks, especially in areas like under your arm, the back of your knees, and scalp. if you're experiencing symptoms, do consult a healthcare provider.

“It was terrifying,” says Susan, remembering the moment her legs stopped responding in the ocean. That one incident led to a 20-year struggle with unexplained symptoms like falls, memory loss, and personality changes.

Doctors suspected dementia but couldn’t offer a solution — until she came to Marcus Neuroscience Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital, part of Baptist Health. There, she was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a reversible brain condition often mistaken for Alzheimer’s.
