During the height of the Jim Crow Era in Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital did not allow Black patients to be treated there until 1953. During that time many of the babies born in the Black Communities were delivered by Mid-Wife's. Profiles in Black Miami during Women History is remembering the Black Women that were instrumental at that time delivering babies of that era. One such woman was Ellen Stirrup known as the Baby Lady. She came to Miami from the Bahamas in 1910, and settled in the Black Historic Community of West Coconut Grove. She was trained by her mother Charlotte Ingram in the skills of being a Mid-Wife. For many years at any hour of the day she traveled to her patients on a bicycle with a black bag, food, and hot water, because many homes in the Black Community didn't have plumbing.at that time. Mrs Sturrup would wash, anoint and prepare the mother while waiting for the baby's arrival. Once the baby was born, she would check, comfort ,clean and present the baby to its mother. As a result of Jim Crow Laws births were taken care of Women like Ellen Sturrup, delivering newborns in their family homes.
