POSTERIOR CHAIN
**Mid-Low back
The mid-low back of the POSTERIOR CHAIN consists of the erector spinae group, which controls the action of bending forward at the waist and extending the back to an erect position. There are 3 muscles that run along the spine.
1. Iliocostalis: attaches to the ribs...the furthest from the spine.
2. Longissimus(thoracic): attaches to the transverse processes of the spine...found in between the other two muscles.
3. Spinalis(thoracic): attaches to the spinous processes directly along the spine.
Deeper to the erector spinae group also attaching to the spinous processes is the multifidus. This muscle is essential to stability and support of the spinal column.

This week we'll be breaking down a region of the body that is often neglected and misunderstood by many...the POSTERIOR CHAIN
What is it?
The POSTERIOR CHAIN is composed of the muscles involved primarily in hip extension: mid-low back, the glute group, hamstrings, and calves. Each of these areas will have their own dedicated post. For now let's keep it general.
Why is it important?
If you love to workout, be active, or are stuck at a desk for multiple hours, then you have at some point felt tightness or discomfort in your lower back. The POSTERIOR CHAIN stabilizes the spine and hips resulting in a healthy posture where the weight of the body is distributed evenly. As soon as there is an Imbalance in the POSTERIOR CHAIN (tightness, weakness, inhibition) that healthy distribution of weight and force dispersing through the body is misaligned resulting in injury and pain. For athletes lifting heavy weights...deadlifts, squats, cleans, or any pulls from the ground to a standing position...the POSTERIOR CHAIN is the foundation of these movements. Please stay tuned as tomorrow the mid-low back portion of the POSTERIOR CHAIN will be broken down.

Amazing article on the thin boundary between mental and physical health!

In a stunning discovery that overturns decades of textbook teaching, researchers have determined that the brain is directly connected to the immune system by vessels previously thought not to exist. The discovery could have profound implications for diseases from autism to Alzheimer's to multiple sc…

Crash Course Series
STRETCHING
In its most basic form stretching is used to relax and loosen muscle fibers to return natural elasticity to the area. The optimal time to stretch is after a workout or training session. Post-workout your body is in an inflamed and contracted state. Stretching will assist in returning your body to a relaxed state where efficient recovery can take place. Post-workout stretching is known to assist in DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness), which will get you back to your next intense training session ready to perform at a high level. One effect that people tend to overlook is the stress relief. When your body is tight, contracted, and sore there is a higher chance of irritability and discomfort due to the release of adrenal hormones, which increases stress levels in general and makes you feel like . Stretching will relax the body and release endorphins to combat the natural stress response of the body after intense physical activity leaving you feeling strong and fully capable of taking on the next activity.
There are numerous other benefits of stretching so please do some research, ask questions, and see what routine works for you

What is Neuromuscular Therapy used for?

NMT seeks to eliminate pain, chronic or acute, by addressing five key elements that cause pain:

Ischemia: the lack of blood flow to soft tissues that causes hypersensitivity to touch.

Trigger points: highly irritated points in muscles that refer pain to other parts of the body.

Nerve entrapment/compression: pressure on a nerve by soft tissue, cartilage or bone.

Postural distortions: imbalance of the muscular system resulting from the movement of the body off the longitudinal and horizontal planes. Longtime poor postural habits are the most common cause of pain from this element.

Biomechanical dysfunction: imbalance of the musculoskeletal system resulting in faulty movement patterns (i.e., poor lifting habits, computer keyboarding, bad mechanics in a golf swing or tennis stroke).

Crash-course Series

Over time of repeating the same movements without sufficient recovery time the muscle fibers being used for those movements begin to stay relaxed in some areas and contracted in others even during rest.
The areas of the muscle fiber that stay contracted even during rest are what are known as the classic "knots" or trigger points.
These small contractions in the muscle fiber (trigger points) create a blockage to the regular blood flow through the fiber. Metabolic waste begins to accumulate around the trigger point, which then causes pain and slight to moderate inflammation in the area.
Trigger point therapy uses precise sustained pressure directly onto the trigger point to get it to release the held contraction and return regular circulation and function back to the area.
