Congratulations to our HIRN 2021 Gateway Award Recipient, Joao Pedro Saar Werneck de Castro, PhD!!!!

Human Islet Research Network (HIRN) is a network of five research consortia, each focused on a specific biological challenge. A NIH NIDDK Funded Initiative.

Dr. Joao Pedro Werneck de Castro (“JP”) research focuses on physical exercise and pancreatic islet biology. His proposed research project aims to understand the direct effects of exercise on human islet structure and function.

“We lost a close colleague, wonderful teacher, mentor and friend of the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes. He will be very much missed,” said Dr. Ernesto Bernal-Mizrachi, Professor and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes.

Lawrence M. Fishman, M.D., touched the lives of thousands of patients, students, trainees and colleagues in a 41-year career as an endocrinologist with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Miami. After retiring in 2008, he continued to serve as professor emeritus before his death on January 27 at the age of 87.

Dr. Lawrence M. Fishman was a bastion of the medical field in life. An educator. A lifesaver. A mentor. All things that come to mind for Fishman’s friends and family when remembering his legacy.

Our 2021 Visiting Professor will be Samuel Klein M.D. from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.
Samuel Klein, M.D. is a William H. Danforth Professor of Medicine, Director of the Center for Human Nutrition, Director of the Center for Applied Research Sciences, Chief of the Division of Geriatrics and Nutritional Sciences, and Director of the Weight Management Program.

Dr. Kenneth Cusi serves as Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism in the Department of Medicine at the University of Florida. He has actively participated in many clinical diabetes programs and in the training of many young researchers and clinicians. He is the principal investigator of various ongoing clinical translational research projects in obesity, Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism is thrilled to have welcomed Guest Speaker Dr. Martin Myers as part of our Endocrinology Grand Rounds today! Thank you, Dr. Myers, for presenting on “The CNS control of Metabolism”. The Myers lab studies the mechanisms by which brain circuits contribute to the control of energy balance and metabolic homeostasis, including a major focus on leptin. Recent work also focuses on neural mechanisms that control glucose homeostasis and brain stem circuits that control feeding.
