Congratulations to Dr. Albert J. Varon, Miller Professor and Vice Chair for Education, Chief of Anesthesiology, Ryder Trauma Center, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, for being selected the 2020 Excellence in Education award recipient. The Committee on Professional Education Oversight is responsible for selecting the recipient for this award. The award is presented annually to an ASA who has made significant contributions to the specialty through excellence in teaching, development of new teaching methods, or the implementation of innovative educational programs.
A review of his accomplishments clearly indicated to me and the committee how he is so very deserving of this award and recognition. Dr. Varon has provided education and training to the next generation of anesthesiologists, and as Chair of the ASA Committee on Trauma and Emergency Preparedness has improved anesthesiology trauma care education in the US.

Thank you everyone for all the words of encouragement. There are lots of heroes in the hospital though. Doctors and nurses get the attention but all the techs that constantly help with patients, the food staff that delivers food to patients, the ones that work in the cafeteria to feed the staff. The patient transporters, the security guards, the receptionists. And the unsung heroes, the ones that deserve most of the credit, the cleaning crew. It’s easy to go and take care of someone with protective equipment, make a mess, and walk out the hero. But how do you make sure that room is clean for the next patient? How do you make sure the equipment you used can be used again and not contaminate the next patient? How do make sure that bed can be used again later? How do you know if your call room which your colleague exhaustedly crash in a few hours ago is not contaminated? Because of the incredible job the cleaning crew does. Because they take pride in their job, clean every detail, and safely throw away what they need to. It is my turn to thank all of you, we can’t do any of this without the entire staff of a hospital. We got hit in the gut today at Jackson losing one of our incredible nurses, but we will prevail and I have never been prouder to work for the UM/JMH families.
