Co-insurance is the cost-sharing portion of a health plan where both the patient and the insurance company pay a percentage of the bill. It applies only after the patient’s deductible has been met.

For example:
A patient’s plan is 80/20 co-insurance (insurance covers 80%, patient covers 20%)

Deductible: $1,000 (that has already met for the year)

Medical bill: $500

Insurance pays: 80% of $500 = $400
Patient pays: 20% of $500 = $100
