According to the &LymphomaSociety, about every three minutes, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma – the most common types of blood cancer. Blood cancer is caused by DNA mutations within blood cells. In most cases, this is linked to factors beyond our control, like age, ethnicity and family history. This Blood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re answering common questions by sharing the facts shown here.

As a part of HCA Healthcare, we give our patients healthier tomorrows through access to a connected oncology network, including nine accredited blood cancer treatment programs. Through these programs, over 1,000 acute leukemia patients receive treatment each year. For some blood cancers, the only potential cure is a blood and marrow transplant. The HCA Healthcare Sarah Cannon Transplant and Cellular Therapy Network is the nation's leading provider of these transplants, conducting over 1,500 annually. Cellular therapy is another potential treatment for those with blood cancer, and our network is also leading the way in this novel treatment.

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with blood cancer, we’re here to help. Find compassionate oncology care: https://bit.ly/3UWnOqE.

Knee pain is a common symptom that can be caused by anything from sports injuries to arthritis. You can usually treat hip pain at home with self-care measures. Physical therapy and knee braces can also help relief the pain. But if the pain persists or gets worse, it might be time to see an orthopedic doctor.

According to the CDC, the rate of total knee replacements has increased in both men and women aged 45 and older with more than 790,000 procedures. Following a relatively short period of recovery, patients usually return to a high level of activity.

“Knowing my work directly affects my patients in a positive way confirms this is my calling,” Sofia says. “I love my hospital because I love my people. The advocacy I see from our nurses and techs inspires me every day.”

Albert Gonzalez, director of the orthopedic and medical-surgical units, said Otero’s presence is already making a difference: “Sofia’s energy, attitude and smile make our patients feel like family. Even as a new team member, she’s making a real difference.”

To all of our HCA Florida Healthcare colleagues, like Sofia, and to the more than 93,000 nurses across our larger HCA Healthcare network, thank you for showing up in ways that make our patients feel seen and cared for. Your dedication helps drive nursing forward at HCA Healthcare and beyond.

School may be underway, but there’s still time for one last camping adventure. Keep your family safe with these smart camping tips for kids:

1. Buddy up. Even bathroom breaks need a partner.
2. Set boundaries. Mark clear campsite limits so kids know where it’s safe to explore.
3. Look, don’t eat. Teach kids not to snack on berries, mushrooms or other wild plants.
4. Steer clear of rash-causing plants. Learn to spot poison ivy, oak and sumac. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes and wash hands often.
5. Shoes on, always. Protect little feet from thorns, rocks and other sharp objects.
6. Tools aren’t toys. Keep kids away from axes, knives and other dangerous gear.
https://bit.ly/3Jmyufu petting wildlife. Even friendly-looking animals can carry disease or bite.
8. Review fire safety. Go over rules before the marshmallows roast — supervised fun is safest.

Want to get ahead of potential heart problems with a simple screening? According to the American Heart Association, 350,000 Americans die from a cardiac arrest each year. Coronary calcium scoring is a quick, non-invasive cardiac exam that can give valuable insight into your heart health.

The inexpensive, elective screening measures the amount of calcium-containing plaque in a person’s arteries. Plaque buildup inside the arteries can grow and restrict blood flow, leading to a heart attack or other heart issues. Watch our video to learn more.

👏 A Southeast first in women’s health.

HCA Florida Mercy Hospital — in collaboration with the HCA Healthcare Research Institute — has become the first hospital in the Southeastern U.S. to perform a minimally invasive hysterectomy using a small, highly precise robotic arm.

Led by Dr. Ricardo Estape, the single-incision, robotically assisted procedure offers women smaller scars, less pain, and a faster recovery — while advancing clinical research that could expand access to safer, less invasive surgical options nationwide.

🧠⏱️ Every second counts when someone is suffering from a stroke. At HCA Florida Mercy Hospital, we’re proud to be part of our larger HCA Healthcare system of care, which collectively responds to strokes 45% faster than the national standard. We know door-to-needle (DTN) time is critical. Here, we explain what DTN time is and why it matters.

DTN time is the amount of time between an ischemic stroke patient's arrival at the hospital (“door”) and when they receive a clot-busting medication (“needle”) to help restore blood flow to the brain. The faster the medicine is given, the more brain cells can potentially be saved, helping to reduce the risk of long-term disability or stroke.

Juana Siverio, 74, had been living with unbearable abdominal pain for years.

Two providers told her surgery wasn’t an option due to severe blockages in her arteries—including those leading to her intestines, heart, and brain. But when her pain became too much to bear, she came to the ER at HCA Florida Mercy Hospital.

That’s when Vascular Surgeon Dr. Daniel Ramirez, Jr. stepped in.

He performed a complex, endovascular procedure to restore blood flow to her intestines—and it worked. Juana is now recovering in our CVICU, finally able to eat without pain or fear of life-threatening complications.

“Dr. Daniel Ramirez, Jr. and everyone around him are amazing! If I hadn’t come to Mercy, I would have died. The reason I’m alive is because of him,” she says.

She’s now looking forward to enjoying what matters most: time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
