💙 A Recovery Powered by Expertise and Teamwork

After a fall fractured her original knee replacement, Elizabeth “Lisa” Hernandez underwent knee replacement revision surgery by orthopedic surgeon Edward Silverman at HCA Florida Mercy Hospital.

Following surgery, Dr. Silverman emphasized physical therapy as a critical part of Lisa’s recovery and encouraged inpatient rehabilitation to help restore her strength and independence.

In rehab, Dr. Terence Peppard, medical director of Rehabilitation Services, developed a personalized plan focused on Lisa’s goals—getting back to daily life, family, and the activities she loves.
Today, Lisa is fully functional—no cane, no walker—and moving forward with confidence.

Watch Lisa share her journey in her own words.

A Silent Aneurysm. A Lucky Find. A Life-Saving Repair at HCA Florida Mercy Hospital

Michael A. Smith, 73, is an active golf player who felt completely fine — no pain, no warning signs.

“I didn’t feel anything,” Michael said. “I got lucky.”

A routine X-ray revealed a 6-centimeter aneurysm, affecting the main artery that carries blood from the heart and the vessels that supply the kidneys and digestive organs. These aneurysms are often called silent killers because symptoms may not appear until rupture is imminent — or already happening.

In the past, treatment would have required major open surgery of the chest and abdomen, followed by a recovery that could last months.

Instead, Dr. Daniel Ramirez Jr., vascular surgeon, performed an advanced minimally invasive endovascular repair, using a specialized stent to safely repair the aneurysm while preserving blood flow to vital organs — all without large incisions. This meant no open chest surgery, a shorter hospital stay and recovery in 3-5 days, not months.

Michael is now recovering and looking ahead.

“I’m tired, but nothing hurts,” he said. “The doctors and staff have been great.”

Photo 2: The custom stent used in the procedure — designed to keep blood flowing to the kidneys and digestive organs while repairing the aneurysm.

This is what advanced vascular care looks like — and why routine imaging and follow-up care can save lives.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the U.S., according to the American Heart Association. However, it doesn’t always present with the classic chest pain we expect.

Many heart attacks are silent or show subtle signs like nausea, shortness of breath, sweating, or pain in the back, shoulders, or abdomen.

If something feels “off” — especially if symptoms appear suddenly — don’t wait. Seek medical help immediately.

Prevention is equally important. Be aware of your risk factors, manage chronic conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure, and embrace a heart-healthy lifestyle. Read our blog to discover subtle heart disease symptoms to watch for: https://www.hcafloridahealthcare.com/healthy-living/blog/heart-disease-symptoms-you-might-not-expect.

Don’t wait until symptoms appear. Schedule an appointment with an HCA Florida Healthcare cardiologist today by calling (833) 544-5031 or visiting our website.

They call themselves “Ganas con Canas” — desire with white hair.

Celina Fajardo and Filiberto Padron have been together for more than 20 years, dancing through life and proving that passion doesn’t fade with age.

From salsa to reggaeton, their joy went viral. After dancing one night at Magic City Casino, they returned a week later to find police waiting — not to stop them, but to take photos with the overnight sensations.

When Filiberto recently started feeling unusually tired and short of breath while dancing, he came to HCA Florida Mercy Hospital to get checked out. He is now continuing his care with interventional cardiologist Dr. Patrick Hourani as an outpatient.

“We are so happy with the care,” they said. “They didn’t know we were famous, but they treated us like royalty.”

We’re so glad Filiberto is feeling better and getting back to what he loves most — spreading joy on the dance floor with Celina. Check out their moves on Ganasconcanas

One of the ways we show up for our Florida communities is by supporting local food banks, pantries and soup kitchens. Throughout the year, our colleagues volunteer their time and donate resources to help families facing food insecurity.

Recently, HCA Florida Memorial Hospital donated thousands of dollars — and a canned food sculpture — to the St. Johns Food Pantry. Our sculpture of the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum won the HCA South Atlantic Division contest and placed second runner‑up nationally among more than 190 hospitals.

It was an emotional moment as St. Johns Food Pantry’s Jon Gorecki accepted our $15,000 check, presented by Chief Operating Officer Chris Kovacs. The 15‑foot‑tall lighthouse, built from 1,400 cans and weighing more than 900 pounds, will be on display this weekend before being donated to the pantry next week — just in time for the holidays.

The St. Johns Food Pantry provides meals to more than 150 people per day, helping feed 750 people each week and more than 3,000 each month. We’re proud to support food‑insecure families in this small but meaningful way.

From our 'house' to yours: May your holidays and New Year be filled with as much joy as the little miracles we witness every day in our NICU and birthing suites. 💖🎄

Last week, our tiniest patients received a very special visitor — Santa stopped by the NICU to bring smiles, comfort and a little extra holiday magic to families spending this season in the hospital. Moments like these remind us how meaningful compassionate care can be.

We understand that every labor and delivery experience is unique. As part of HCA Healthcare — our larger network of care — we’re able to bring together top‑notch teams of neonatal specialists who work collaboratively, sharing insights and expertise, to make sure your child receives the highest possible care.

Just in time for Christmas.

“We could not have asked for a better experience to welcome our precious baby girl. Everyone here is incredible; literally every nurse was so kind and made us feel comfortable. The nurses — Kerrin, Elizabeth, Shy, Ruby — the CRNA, Jenny, and the entire OR staff who assisted me during my C‑section were exceptional. My epidural was administered without complications and was closely monitored. From room cleaning to food service, we were truly well taken care of. Even my husband was checked on regularly. I have no complaints. It was a five‑star experience,” said Ashley.

As one of the largest healthcare providers in the state, we’ve welcomed more than 32,000 newborns in the past year — a birth every 17 minutes. Whether you’re looking for holistic birthing assistance or the latest technology and the assurance of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), we’re committed to providing the specialized care you want when you need it.

You can trust us to deliver expert care with compassion. Register for our upcoming tours, classes and events at your local hospital: https://bit.ly/3MKtHq5.

Congratulations to Josh and Ashley on their very special Christmas gift that made them first-time parents!

At HCA Florida Healthcare, we know that welcoming a baby into the world is more than a moment. It’s an experience families remember forever.

In 2023, Mackenzie delivered her baby, Hudson, at HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital. One of the nurses caring for her that day was Kristen — and what started as compassionate, patient-centered care turned into something truly special.

“I really wanted to make her delivery experience incredible like I do for every patient,” Kristen shared. “We just bonded during her time here. Two years later we’re close friends. I came to Hudson’s birthday party. Mackenzie came to my wedding. We cared for her like family, and now she is basically family.”

Stories like Mackenzie and Kristen’s are why our team shows up with so much heart. At HCA Florida Healthcare, every delivery is personal, and every family is cared for like our own.

Every day, families across Florida trust us with moments just like this — with nearly 33,000 babies delivered last year. That’s a new little life every 16 minutes. Whether you’re preparing to welcome your first baby or your fourth, our experienced labor and delivery team is here to support you every step of the way.
