We are so grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with the staff from the LaPorte County Dorothy S. Crowley Juvenile Services Center in providing Youth Mental Health First Aid.

During the month of March and early April, 41 staff from JSC increased their knowledge about common diagnoses in youth, typical adolescent development, how to support youth in non-crisis and crisis situations, and develop their own Self-Care Action Plan as Mental Health First Aiders.

• Peer-reviewed studies have proven that trained Mental Health First Aiders are more knowledgeable and confident when it comes to identifying and helping an individual in distress.

• The new MHFA curriculum gives First Aiders working definitions for trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It describes the types of crises associated with trauma and emphasizes the importance of early intervention following a traumatic event. First Aiders receive clear guidance for supporting someone immediately after a traumatic event, as well as over the time that follows. This added instruction on trauma will help First Aiders better assess and respond to situations where they encounter someone dealing with trauma related to COVID-19 or other events.

• The MHFA curriculum helps First Aiders understand what self-care is and the
various forms it can take. The curriculum demonstrates how self-care is important to resilience and recovery and then helps First Aiders develop their own self-care action plans that they can use to navigate traumas and stressors.

What does a “good day” look like for you?
For some, it’s feeling calm. For others, it’s just getting through.
There’s no one definition—and that’s okay.
Let us know in the comments: We want to know what a good day looks like for you.
At Swanson Center, we meet people where they are—because everyone deserves more good days.

We are grateful and honored to have partnered with La Porte High School and Austyn Kelso to train 235 students during the months of February and early March in teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA).
tMHFA teaches young people how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among their friends and peers. It does not teach them to diagnose. The tMHFA course discusses topics such as mental health and substance use challenges, mental health crises (including su***de), violence and bullying.
National surveys and other studies show that young people will turn to their friends for support before approaching a parent, sibling, significant other, teacher, online service or professional/school service.
This training teaches young people ages 14-18 (high school aged) the skills they need to recognize and help their friends with mental health and substance use challenges and crises and how to get the help of a trusted adult quickly.
