Tomorrow marks the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year and the official start of winter. Winter is a time of reflection. Use these cold winter months to double down on self care. Foot baths, meditation, stretching & acupressure are all called for. Ask yourself what patterns are still serving you? What are you ready to let go of? What intentions would you like to hold for the coming year? Deeply nourishing ourselves during winter gives us the needed energy, vision, and purpose to emerge renewed and inspired in the coming spring.

Winter weather is here. During the cold winter months focus on warm foods with long slow cook times. Avoid raw salad and smoothies. Soups and stews are the perfect fare.

Salt is the flavor of winter. Salt moistens, softens hard accumulations and detoxes the body. For naturally salty foods try nuts & seeds, miso, shellfish, olives, barley, millet, artichoke, nori seaweed and ham.

Incorporating a little more meat in your winter diet will warm and strengthen your body.

Dark colored fruits and vegetables are important to strengthen your kidney energy. Think black beans and dark kidney beans, dark colored berries, beets, kale.

Stewed fruits like apples, pears and berries make for nourishing sweet treat which keeps the lungs moist in the dry winter air.

Lastly keep up the pungent foods which move the circulation such as ginger, garlic, onions, leek, cinnamon, cayenne & cumin.
