is a good moment to recognize a group of educators who rarely get enough visibility: Teachers of the Visually Impaired.

TVIs provide specialized instruction that makes academic access possible for students who are blind or have low vision — from Braille literacy and assistive technology to orientation within the school environment. Their work operates at the intersection of education, rehabilitation, and adaptive technology, and it directly affects long-term outcomes for the students they serve.

FLVBS works alongside TVIs and educational teams to provide the assistive technology training and support that students with visual impairments need. If you are a TVI or work with one, we are a resource worth knowing.

Students with Cortical Visual Impairment often have measurably good eye function but significant difficulty using their vision in educational settings. Standard literacy approaches do not account for how CVI affects visual processing, which means many students go underserved without the right support.

Teachers of the Visually Impaired who specialize in CVI can make a significant difference. At FLVBS, we work with students and educational teams to provide the specialized instruction and assistive technology training that supports genuine academic access.

If you work with students who have CVI or suspect a student may have an undiagnosed visual processing condition, we are a resource worth knowing.

Sustained employment is achievable for individuals who are blind or have low vision. The gap comes from access to the right training before and during the job, not capability.

FLVBS works with clients entering the workforce for the first time and those returning after vision loss. Same goal either way: long-term, sustainable employment.

April is CVI Literacy Awareness Month.

Cortical Visual Impairment is a brain-based condition that affects how visual information is processed. It is the leading cause of visual impairment in children in the United States and requires specialized educational support.

At FLVBS, we provide assistive technology training and education support for individuals with CVI throughout Florida.

Assistive technology training at FLVBS is not a one-size approach.

For one client, it might mean learning to use a screen reader effectively within a specific work environment. For another, it is getting comfortable with magnification software on a device they already own, or learning to navigate a smartphone using only voice commands.

The tools exist. What most people lack is structured, hands-on instruction tailored to how they actually use technology day-to-day. What we provide is practical training built around each client's situation, not a generic curriculum.

Earlier this month, we attended the 9th Annual Marion County Emergency Preparedness Expo, hosted by the Center for Independent Living of North Central Florida.

The event brought together local organizations, agencies, and vendors focused on emergency readiness for individuals with disabilities. For individuals with vision loss, emergency preparedness involves specific planning that standard resources often do not cover — accessible alert systems, vision-specific emergency kits, and transportation planning for those who do not drive.

FLVBS works with clients throughout Florida on independent living skills that include practical emergency preparedness. If you or someone you know could benefit from that support, we are here.

Earlier this week, we attended the 9th Annual Marion County Emergency Preparedness Expo, hosted by the Center for Independent Living of North Central Florida.

Events like this are a useful reminder that emergency planning for individuals with vision loss involves considerations that standard preparedness resources often do not cover: accessible alert systems, vision-specific emergency kits, and transportation planning for those who do not drive are all areas where having a plan ahead of time matters.

FLVBS works with clients throughout Florida on independent living skills that include practical emergency preparedness. If you or someone you know could benefit from that kind of support, we are available.

At Florida Visually Impaired and Blind Services, we work with individuals to explore wearable vision solutions and determine whether these tools align with daily routines and long-term goals.

Devices like eSight Go use a lightweight, head-mounted display to enhance remaining vision, allowing users to see faces, read signs, and navigate environments with greater confidence.
