It’s Medical Vocabulary Monday!

This week’s term is a rare but remarkable procedure: multivisceral transplant.

A multivisceral transplant is a complex surgery in which multiple abdominal organs—such as the stomach, pancreas, small intestine, liver, and sometimes the kidney—are transplanted at the same time.

It’s typically performed when diseases like severe intestinal failure, tumors, or vascular disorders affect several abdominal organs at once, making individual organ transplants insufficient.

While it’s one of the most challenging types of transplantation, advances in surgical techniques and immunosuppressive therapy have improved outcomes and given many patients a second chance at life.

Health Tip: Help Your Teen Use Social Media in a Positive Way

There is growing evidence that social media is causing harm to young people’s mental health. Here’s what parents need to know.

Over the last decade, increasing evidence has identified the potential negative impact of social media on adolescents.

According to a research study of American teens ages 12-15, those who used social media over three hours each day faced twice the risk of having negative mental health outcomes, including depression and anxiety symptoms.

Parents can help guide their teen’s social media use in the right direction by:

-Determine the age your child will have access to social media.
-Keep devices out of the bedroom.
-Keep the lines of communication open, and let your teen make mistakes.
-Be mindful of your approach when talking to your teen.
-Follow the rules yourself.

“The issues we face now with social media are similar to those we faced when television came out,” says Linda Mayes, MD, chair of the Yale Child Study Center (YCSC). She explains that, as with TV watching, there are pros and cons to social media for young people. But parents can help filter out the parts that may be detrimental.

A cancer diagnosis is a shock at any age, but it hits differently when you're young. It can be an emotional roller coaster—and you don’t know where it’s headed. One moment, you were excited about college, your new job, or your next date. The next, your plans are put on hold. Your dreams of a wedding, a house, or a family suddenly feel uncertain.

This is the reality for people who have early onset cancer, a term commonly used for cancer diagnosed in adults between the ages of 18 and 49.

“Cancer is so unexpected—the younger you are, the more it seems to come completely out of the blue,” says Nancy Borstelmann, PhD, MPH, LCSW, co-director of the Early Onset Cancer Program at Yale Cancer Center, which cares for patients ages 18 to 45. “You are confronted by questions you’ve never had to consider before. The stress and anxiety can feel overwhelming.”

On Sept. 1, Wolfram Goessling, MD, PhD, assumed the role of chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at Yale School of Medicine (YSM), chief of Internal Medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital, and physician-in-chief for Medicine across the Yale New Haven Health System. Since his first few days at Yale, Goessling has been meeting people and building connections.

“I'm excited to be in a place that is an integral part of both the School of Medicine and the university. It's a community and an environment that I'm looking forward to being a part of. My first step is to learn what our faculty, staff, and trainees are excited about and where they get their motivation.

“I lead by example, meaning I don't expect of others what I wouldn't expect of myself. I also lead from behind, encouraging and supporting people and getting excited for and with them when they take steps, especially if those steps are unknown, risky, or scary. I’ve always gotten excited about the projects and successes of my faculty and trainees, and that will always continue.”

It’s Medical Vocabulary Monday!

This week’s term is ageusia. Ageusia is the complete loss of the sense of taste. While relatively rare, it can result from a variety of causes, including:

-Viral infections (such as colds, flu, or COVID-19)
-Nerve damage (from head injury or surgery)
-Certain medications
-Underlying medical conditions like zinc deficiency or neurological disorders

Losing your ability to taste can impact appetite, nutrition, and overall quality of life. Ageusia is related to hypogeusia, a partial loss of taste, and anosmia, the loss of smell, which often goes hand in hand.

Health Tip: Manage Heel Pain at Home

Persistent heel pain can slow you down—whether you’re running, jumping, or strolling the grocery store aisles. In many cases, a common foot condition called plantar fasciitis is the culprit.

The good news is that, in most cases, simple at-home measures, such as stretching, wearing a night splint, and investing in supportive footwear, can make a significant difference, says Sean Peden, MD, a Yale Medicine foot and ankle surgeon.

There are three simple, evidence-based ways to treat the pain:

-Try a night splint. The first line of treatment is often a padded, flexible splint that holds your foot at a 90-degree angle while you sleep, keeping the plantar fascia gently stretched.

-Stretch it out. Stretching can help prevent plantar fasciitis and is one of the most effective treatment approaches.

-Check your footwear and opt for shoes with good arch support, meaning the insole doesn’t collapse when you walk/or run—and a stable, cushioned heel that absorbs shock and fits snugly.

If none of the above recommendations for treating plantar fasciitis work, Dr. Peden advises talking to a foot specialist about treatment options such as cortisone injections or surgery.

Approximately 11 percent of children in the United States between the ages of four and 17 have been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Usually diagnosed in childhood, this lifelong condition can profoundly affect how well a child functions at home, at school and socially.

If you're wondering if your child may have ADHD, some signs you may notice are:
-Difficulty concentrating
-Impulsivity
-Hyperactivity

All children act this way sometimes, making it tricky to pin down whether or not a particular child’s behavior actually reflects ADHD. But, looking at trends over their lifespan to date can help make the determination.
