Feeding your baby isn’t supposed to feel like a battle. If you’re noticing any of these patterns, it’s a good time to get curious and ask for support:
• Frequent coughing, choking, or sputtering during feeds
• Lots of clicking or very noisy swallowing
• Feeds that are always very long (over ~40 minutes) or very short and unsatisfying
• Arching, stiffening, pulling away, or crying with most feeds
• Only taking good feeds when drowsy or asleep
• Ongoing worries about weight gain, frequent forceful spit-up, or fewer wet diapers

Baby feeding should feel mostly calm and connected. “When to get curious” is when patterns start to feel off, not when you’ve done something wrong.
Trust your instincts and check in with your pediatrician, lactation consultant, or infant feeding therapist – OT/PT/SLP—early support can make feeding feel safer and more comfortable for both of you.
