Holidays With Family

Being in situations that we might not choose for ourselves allows us to see ourselves in a new light.

As the holidays approach, you may be preparing yourself to gather with family members you don’t usually spend time visiting. You may even feel that you are choosing to go because of a sense of obligation rather than celebration. But when we trust that the universe always places us exactly where we need to be, we know that we have been placed in our families for some higher purpose. Your spirit may have chosen that particular group of souls to help you learn certain lessons or to give you the experiences necessary to overcome specific challenges. When we feel we’ve moved away from situations that don’t resemble us or the life we choose to live, it can seem frustrating to put ourselves back into an old scenario. But even a sense of obligation is a sign that you are still connected to the energy of your family, and for that alone, it is worth investing yourself into making the most of any gathering.

Once surrounded by people from your past, you may find that you are feeling challenged by a sort of identity crisis. There is likely a gap between the person you know yourself to be now and how you are seen by those who knew you before. You can call upon your inner strength to stand in your truth and simply be who you are — without needing their approval or heeding any criticism. Then, when you allow them to be themselves, you can offer them the gift you’d like to receive.

Being in situations that we might not choose for ourselves allows us to see ourselves in a new light. The contrast helps us see our own strengths and weaknesses, and learn to accept others for theirs. Part of the magic of family is the way in which it bonds diverse people together, allowing them to function as a complete unit. Who we are today has been built upon our past. If nothing else, rejoining with the family and friends who knew us in our earlier days allows us to recall where we came from so that we can appreciate all that we’ve been given.

Reclaiming Our Roots

As we begin to see more clearly the people we come from, we can begin to alter our perception of who we are now.

Some cultures are more rooted to the Earth and connected to their inherent spirituality. But every one of us, even those of us who have been disconnected from our roots for hundreds of years, comes from a place that was once inhabited by people who worshiped and honored the Earth on which they lived. In other words, we can all claim this wisdom as an essential part of who we are.

One way we can begin to rediscover our roots is to explore the early Earth-based religions practiced in the parts of the world that birthed our ancestors. If we explore the ancient spiritual practices of our ancestors, we will find that their practices and beliefs share many elements with Native American, African, and aboriginal religious traditions. People who are connected to the Earth and honor her share a fundamental philosophy that is part of our legacy because we, too, are of the Earth. Many of us have become so disconnected from the Earth that it feels foreign and awkward to imagine communing with her or performing a ritual for her. If we are honest, though, we will find within ourselves yearning to feel more connected, more grounded, and more at home in this world. This yearning can lead us back to our forgotten roots, which leads us right into the heart of the Earth.

As we begin to see more clearly the people we come from, we can begin to alter our perception of who we are now, laying claim to our inherent connection to the Earth. We might celebrate this by observing the ancient calendar of solstices and equinoxes, honoring the cycle of the seasons as our ancestors did or exploring any one of the many Earth-based practices through reading or participating in a ritual. When we do these things, we tap back into our roots and can often find nourishment through our earthly origins — something we share with all of humanity.

Returning to Creative Dreams
Take the time to reclaim your creativity, and watch your life blossom as a result.

As children, many of us entertained fantasies or even goals of being an actor, singer, dancer, artist, or musician. In some cases, we received enough encouragement to develop our abilities in those creative arenas, but somewhere along the way we may have stopped. This stopping may have been due to circumstances beyond our control or to our own unconscious acts of self-sabotage. Being creative can be scary in a world that seems to value logic over imagination and practicality over dreaming. We can forgive ourselves for shutting down or turning our attention away from our inner artist, but perhaps, we also can take steps to reclaim our dreams.

In certain times and places, developing a creative ability was considered an important part of being a well-rounded human being. It was not necessary to be a professional because the act of creativity was valued in and of itself. Its gifts are manifold — from the sheer pleasure of allowing our imaginations free rein to sharing and enjoying the fruits of our labor. Children share drawings and songs freely, without self-consciousness, and there is no reason why we cannot do the same thing. You may already be remembering some lost form of expression, such as making jewelry or writing songs. Your soul may be responding with an energetic lift as it feels its way back to a time when it was allowed to express itself freely. Your brain, on the other hand, may be throwing up obstacles, like the idea that you are too old or do not have the time.

The truth is, you are not too old, and if you have time to pick up a pen, you have time to make a doodle or write a haiku. Recognize that the obstacles you see arise from a place of fear, and they will wane in power every time you do something creative. Each creative act takes you deeper into a realm of beauty and magic — a realm that you have every right to return to and reclaim.

Without realizing it, we may be spending energy engaging in friendships that let us down, rather than cultivating ones that nourish us.

There comes a time in all our lives when we may need to evaluate our relationships, making sure that they are having a positive effect on us, rather than dragging us down. Without realizing it, we may be spending precious time and energy engaging in friendships that let us down, rather than cultivating ones that support and nourish us along our path. Life, with its many twists, turns, and challenges, is difficult enough without us entertaining people in our inner circle who drain our energy. We can do so much more in this world when we are surrounded by people who understand what we’re trying to do and who positively support our efforts to walk our path.
We can begin this evaluation process by simply noticing how we feel in the context of each one of our close relationships. We may begin to see that an old friend is still carrying negative attitudes or ideas that we ourselves need to let go of in order to move forward. Or we may find that we have a long-term relationship with someone who has a habit of letting us down or not showing up for us when we need support. There are many ways to go about changing the status quo in situations like this — having a heart-to-heart talk with our friend and showing through example. This process isn’t so much about abandoning old friends as it is about shifting our relationships so that they support us on our journey rather than hold us back.

An important part of this process is looking at ourselves and noticing what kind of friend we are to the people in our lives. We might find that as we adjust our own approach to a relationship, challenging ourselves to be more supportive and positive, our friends make adjustments as well and the whole world benefits.

Mind Over Matter
We have the power to create physical health and mental health, simply by paying attention to the tapes running in our minds.

The power of the mind is a curious thing because it is so powerful yet so difficult to control sometimes. We find ourselves thinking a certain way, knowing that this thought may be creating trouble for us, yet we find it difficult to stop. For example, many people have the experience of getting sick at the same time every year or every time they go on a plane. They may even be aware that their beliefs impact their experiences. But they continue to think they will get sick, and then they do.

Sometimes we need to get sick in order to process something or move something through our body. But often we get sick or feel exhausted because we don’t make the effort to galvanize the power of our minds in the service of our physical health, which is one of its most important functions. We really can use it to communicate to our body, yet we often regard the two as separate entities that have little to do with one another.

Knowing this, we have the power to create physical health and mental health, simply by paying attention to the tapes running in our minds. Once we hear ourselves, we have the option to let that tape keep running or to make a new recording. When we choose supportive, healing words that foster good health and high spirits, we harness the power of the mind in our defense. All we need to do is to tend to the field of our mind with the attentive and loving hand of a master gardener taking care of their flower beds by culling out the weeds so that the blossoms may come to fruition.

I love this! What are you doing with your energy?

People often mistake my silence for absence, not realizing that I’m simply in a phase of focused growth and self-discovery. As I've grown older, I’ve come to understand the importance of strategic decision-making and the value of prioritizing my ambitions. Right now, I'm making significant strides towards financial independence and pursuing opportunities that align with my long-term goals. My quiet demeanor reflects the serious work I'm putting into shaping my future, rather than any disinterest in the world around me.
This stage of life is about intentionality, and I’m learning to filter out distractions that don’t serve my purpose. While some may see my restraint as a lack of engagement, it’s actually a conscious choice to invest my energy where it matters most. I’m focused on making moves that make sense, ensuring that each step I take is calculated and aligned with my vision. So, while I may not always be the loudest voice in the room, know that my silence is a testament to my commitment to growth and meaningful progress

Living under labels

Many of us find ourselves laboring under a label that has a negative connotation, but this can be reversed.

We live in a culture that uses labels as a means of understanding the world and the people living in it. As a result, many of us find ourselves laboring under labels that have a negative connotation. Unless we can find a way to see the good in such labels, we may feel burdened by an idea of ourselves that is not accurate. It is important to remember that almost nothing in this world is all good or all bad. Most everything is a complex mixture of gifts and challenges. In addition, different cultures revere certain qualities over others, but this does not mean that certain qualities are inherently good or bad. For example, a culture that elevates outgoing behavior will label an introvert in a negative way, calling them antisocial. In truth, the ability to spend time alone is one that great artists, mystics, and visionaries share. Owning the positive side of this label can lead us deeper into our vision and fertile imaginations.

When we look into the lives of many of the great people in history, we find that they had quirks and eccentricities that earned them less-than-ideal labels from the societies in which they lived. Many famous artists and musicians were considered to be isolated loners or disruptive troublemakers, sometimes both, yet these people altered history and contributed an original vision or advances in our understanding of the universe to the world. If we can remember this as we examine ourselves and the labels people use to describe us, we can find that there is a bright side to any characterization.

If you have been labeled, remember that all you have to do to see the positive side is to turn the label around. For example, you may be called overly emotional, and the fact that you are perceived this way may make you feel out of control. But also notice the gifts of being able to feel and express your emotions, even in a world that doesn’t always encourage that. You might begin to see yourself as brave and open-hearted. You also may see that there are certain paths and professions in which this is a necessary ability. As you turn your label around, the light of your true nature shines to guide you on your way.
