Our Story
Our curious name stems from the simple acts of sharing and caring. One day, back in 1889, as two sisters descended from their attic with arms filled with items to share with families less fortunate, their father exclaimed, “Here come my attic angels.” And history was born.
Ever since, the volunteer members of Attic Angel Association have joined forces to leave deep fingerprints on the history of Madison, caring for the health and well-being of children and seniors. Among their accomplishments: they hosted a charity ball in the UW’s Red Gym and raised money to build Madison’s first hospital (today’s UnityPoint Meriter); they paid the salary of a professional nurse to visit families well before there were such things as clinics (today’s SSM Health at Home); they helped start an early learning center to serve economically disadvantaged families in south Madison (today’s One City Schools); and they pioneered high-quality retirement living with various levels of health care (today’s Attic Angel Community).
Attic Angel Community is made up of Attic Angel Association (volunteer and grant-making organization), Attic Angel Place (senior living with various levels of health care) and Attic Angel Prairie Point (neighborhood of homes for seniors to live independently with the safety net of health care as they need it). Today, more than 500 volunteer Angels and 280 employees work together for a common theme of caring for community.
